Devon that likes to conk out when hot

Hi, I'm running a Vege 1.6 twinport in a 1971 T2 Devon and I've been up the country and back and when hot the engine conks out when coming back to an idle (motorway jam or traffic lights etc). I had a service before the trip and normal car oil was put in and Halfords classic car oil taken out. Is the conking out due to the engine running hot with the wrong oil or is this something else entirely. Vege recommend 10w-40 semi-synthetic for the record. Any ideas?
 
Receintly had the same deal with mine, took it to a shop...timed an tuned, valves adjusted but when it got hot wouldnt go any faster than 50mph. And had back pops and woul not hold an idle.

Tried adjusting it out... Still no sucess let it sit over night took it back to the mechanic, oddly ran like a top to, asked, and couldnt get it to act up, I ran it again- until hot and Symptoms came back, check plugs and wires.

Long story short, check your points! Mine were fried yet still somehow just barely were opening. Heh. Cheap simple qwik fix. Mechanic was shocked my motor was still running with the points in the shape they were in.

..Thanks, I'll check both of these suggestions out. It used to happen with the old knackered engine I had before this one and we've done a few really long runs since replacement without trouble. Will keep you posted.
 
I had this exact problem. Obviously check the usual suspects like points and valve clearance - but in my case it wasnt points as it happened both before and after fitting pertronix ignition.

My temporary fix was to unscrew the bypass screw about 2-3 turns (on the left side of the carb there are two recessed screws - the bypass screw is the larger of the two). This increased the idle speed and got me to the campsite.

Next time it happened I tightened the throttle adjustment screw (on the throttle lever which is on the side of the carb and the end on the screw sits on a kind of 'stepped' cam) a bit. That seemed to solve it.

It's a frustrating issue because it's hard to replicate for your garage as it only seems to happen after long motorway journeys.
 
Exactly, I've got Tony Drane coming to have a look tomorrow and he normally is able to wave his magic wand over it, however I'll keep your advice as a back up plan when we're away, thanks. L
