Hi peeps...having problems with my dizzy drive engine 1600 AE.....whilst firing on no1 cylinder with the timming mark at tdc....the dizzy drive should be at 90 degrees to the engine casing....but mine isnt....i can take it out and can only get to to either 20 past ot 10 too if that makes sense....so thiers no way of strobe timming it up and the engine runs shite.....any idea's??????

it does not really matter what position the drive gear is in. set the engine to fire stroke on TDC on no1 and then set your dizzy to no 1 mark and time as per engine set up ie 009 set at 28 to 32 deg BTDC @ 3000rpm or if vac dizzy i think of the top of my head 7deg BTDC vac pipe removed but dont quote me on that as i dont have my book to hand. the drive gear position at 90 deg to case centre, only means that your dizzy isnt in a wanky possition.

I kinda understand what your saying....but if the dizzy drive isnt at 90 degrees....it throws out the strobe by miles......no way of setting it properly to 5 degrees after tdc with vac hoses on.....proper head scratcher....

no, the strobe fires of no 1 lead. if you turn the dizzy so that the rotor is pointing to no 1 plug lead when the engine is at tdc you will be in the ball park, then you can fine tune the dizzy with the strobe. i take it the motor has not been split?

Not to my knowledge....just got the bus from the states the other week.....replaced all the ususal service items...plugs,points,cap,rotor,condensor,set valve clearences etc.....still ran shitty,lumpy.....put the strobe on it no1 cylinder right rear as you look into the engine bay.....it must of been at least 40 degrees out according to the light.....so i took out the dizzy, set the engine up onto no1 tdc and low and behold the drive was a mile out......

ha, ive never bothered about the drive possition unless its a motor ive built for someone, have you checked that the pully is marked correct for your engine by checking that no1 piston is at top on fire stroke?

just while i think of it,have you checked the carb and manifolds for leaks?

Set the engine to TDC on No1 (rear right as you look at it) and wherever the rotor arm points to this is where No1 lead should be then just fit the remaining leads in normal order and tune with strobe as you would normally.
Doesn't matter whether the rotor arm is pointing at No1 or not (or whether it lines up with the notch in the dizzy case) as long as the leads are correctly fitted according to the firing order. Sounds like the engine has been apart and the dizzy drive wasn't aligned correctly on re-fitment

froggy, don't you mean front right as you look at it (from the rear) for cylinder nr 1? Unless I am having a brain dead moment.....

The main pulley can only go on one way round, so basically you can line up the timing marks twice, 180 degree's apart (one position being tdc). Once you know where the rotor points at tdc, then as was explained put no.1 plug to that position on the cap (ignoring the correct place it should be when the drive is fitted the right way) and continue to work round the cap with the remaining leads in the firing order. Then your timing light should work correctly
