Hi ... hope someone can help.

Just recently my van has started to cut out when revved ... this is new. 1600 twin port with SVDA electronic ignition and 34 pict 3 carb plus oil bath air filter. (Pic below has the preheat hose moved out of way for clarity)

What seems to be happening now is that the engine starts fine and warms up until the choke is fully off. Then it idles nicely at 8 - 900rpm. If I then rev it up it seems ok for a while but then suddenly cuts out and dies. If I catch it in time by backing off I can just about bring it back to idle and once steady it will rev fine again until it cuts out again. (This is revving whilst stationary using the accelerator linkage on the carb ... not driving)

Does any one have any thoughts or suggestions. It is a change from how it was running previously .... strangely it started happening after a simple oil change .... though I struggle to see how this might be related?

I initially thought it might be carb icing ... but the pre-heat is attached and although one of the manifold risers I think is blocked .... it wasn't happening before - so the change would appear too rapid for this to be the cause?

check points gap mine was similar to your problem points closed on mine although they where new also condenser gives a fault same as running out of fuel simple checks

Hi Private jobs,

Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately it is electronic ignition so no points or condenser .... am told with electronic they either work or die which would be a different symptom.

and your plastic fuel filter is on the high pressure side of the pump it should be under near the fuel tank

You really need to change your fuel lines (and presumably filter, too).

Fueling could be you issue. It is drawing enough for idle but not enough when under load for a short while.

EDIT: Duh. Confusing your servo and fuel lines  Either way - when did you last change your lines? Point above could still be valid.

Hi Gvee, thanks for responding.

Fuel lines are all pretty new .... I put new on over the summer. Filter is now 10 months old .... would it be due a change (± 5000 miles) ?.

There seems to be differing opinions about the position of the fuel filter - mine was put there by one reputable specialist garage and ok'd by another. What would be the issues as installed apart from being in the engine bay?

It sounds from what both of you are saying that the problem could be fuel starvation - makes sense .... I will look to give the carb a good cleaning.

Any other thoughts / suggestions gratefully received.

One thing I noticed on the electronic ignition distributor cap was that the central spring loaded rod that is located in the top of a traditional cap beneath the coil feed is flush with the top of the housing with no movement .... does anyone know if that is correct? The cap certainly isn't interchangeable with my old 009 unit.

haveing the fuel filter on the high pressure side of the pump means if the filter should split the fuel will still pump out if under the tank it will just leak and not go Ka boooom vw allways fitted them under the vehicle and the carbon centre should be spring loaded

there was a guy on hear that tightened his fuel filter clips so tight it would only tick over when he checked the filter it was crushed one end check them

Hi Private jobs,

Comments noted on fuel filter .... makes sense to me.

I'm thinking the distributor cap is the problem as the carbon centre is almost non existent! What effect would that have?

Yes the air filter is from a beetle .... it fits ok because a previous owner hacked out part of the upper strengthening and insulation .... works the same as the bay filter though!. Tried it because the support for the offset bay filter has also been cut out at some point .... its an American import.

Thanks again.

if the carbon is not fully loaded onto the rotor arm it could be you problem just put on a new cap

Hi Private jobs,

Have found another dizzy cap and fingers crossed that seems to have sorted it ..... can't make it die anymore! feel a bit silly now!

Will road test it later this coming week once I have freed up the back wheels from the handbrake Grrrr!

Thanks for the other thoughts .... will definitely move the filter to below the tank.

Cheers

Tim
