I have an AE case out of a bay that i have stripped down in prep for a rebuild but there are a few marks on the case / bearing seats that i'm not to sure of, they look ok and i assume are actually casting faults but thought i would put up a few pics for someone with more experience to have a look at and let me know what they think before i spend time and money on a potentially useless case.

They don't look to bad to me, but then again it is hard to judge just by looking at a picture :| Take it to an engine builder or a machine shop and see what they say.

Keep in mind, that an AE-series crankcase, corresponds to a North American specification, 1971 VW 1600 Type 2.

I'm not sure about the markings on the bearings, but some of them might indicate a line-bored crankcase and/or reground crankshaft; detailing whether a 1st, 2nd or 3rd, crankshaft regrind and/or crankshaft line boring.

i am presuming you have removed the dowels. as for the pics look like the bearings have been spinning in the case by the marks on it.
either that or my eyesight is screwed :D

^^^ Hmm, what he said ^^^

3rd picture down from top looks a bit naughty some scoring in the saddles.
Do you have any history of this engine ?

The Tom Wilson book will help you decode the bearing markers too.

Good luck

I removed the dowels so as not to lose them, the rear of the bearings are good so if there has been any bearing spinning it wasn;t with the bearings i removed.
Have had it confirmed that the crank has had a regrind (0.25mm) apparently the M10 / R10 marking on the crank tell you this :?
