Well we just got back from camperjam and after a good weekend we had a rear blowout on the M69 and I didn't have a spare. The recovery wouldn't shift us due to the lack of spare and the best I could do was use the breakdown cover with my bank account to get them to contact a tyre service. So £166 poorer we hit the road again only to lose a hub cap on the A46, I guess in my rush to set off I didn't secure it properly

So lesson learnt, always carry a spare and make sure hubcaps are secure! No other damage done so it could have been worse. Hope everyone else got back safely!

:( sorry to hear about that- but glad you got back ok. We got back without incident, nice to meet you at camperjam :)

Likewise mike :) I hope you have eaten your words about Murray today

So recovery didn't do their job because you didn't have a spare? Most new cars don't have spares these days just a can of tyre weld & a compressor, these not covered by a blowout too?

Glad your ok (apart from your wallet!)

Glad you got sorted. There was a burned out bay on the M6 south tonight, so someone had a worse day :(

I was a bit miffed but apparently it's in the small print! If your car originally would have had a spare you have to carry one, the RAC said the same although they were more helpful and offered a tow off the motorway and help finding an emergency fitter.

Ouch definitely worse :( If a blowout is the worst thing to happen to us then I definitely wont complain too much.

I have a half decent domed hub cap in my for sale thread..... and a spare wheel carrier :D

Thanks :) Unfortunately the hub cap isn't shiny enough and a bigger logo though.... Only problem with getting the bus painted is everything has to be pretty much perfect now

Sorry to hear about that Adam, I have a spare hub cap with your name on it if you want it and can take it to dubs in a fortnights time. I too saw the burnt out late bay on the M6.... What a bummer.

Glad to hear it was only a tyre and nothing more serious.

glad no damage was done and that you got back safely, in the end

Guess ill be looking for a Porsche space saver then!

I have one, but dont carry it as i have full width bed in the back and no roof rack, lol.

i wonder what they would do if i had a blow out in my z4 as they are run flats with no spare or tyre weld or compressor. run flats are good for slow punctures, but not blowouts

Glad to hear that you are OK mate, even though it cost you a wad to get going. :(

A good lesson in reading the small print on our recovery docs, I reckon. Mine specifies that a spare must be carried...so I do, reluctantly. :|

£166
Well at least it was only the tyre and wallet that was damaged.
Thanks for this post hopefully it will save some of us a similar experience.

Wowsers that's an expensive lesson, but as all above have said the blow out itself could have been a lot worse so glad you were both safe, and of course the oh so cute dogs :)

Its overkill as I have two spares one for the front and one for the rear but after chatting to Minty I may just opt for one somewhere in the middle :?:

Do late model Passats have a space saver? Also same PCD? Hmmmm...

Two spares  that is prepared

I guess I'm going to have to get something in between as the fronts are quite small. Not ideal but at least it should let me limp home or to a garage. Hopefully this thread will save someone else a few quid anyway :D

Oh and also check the age of the tyres, may be teaching you all to suck eggs but the fitter reckoned it probably blew out due to age. The tyre was 9 years old, I never thought to check the age as the tread always looked good.......
