OK finally got to drive my bay for the first time today after getting it registered.

It seems to go ok, brakes are a lot better then I expected but the engine needs attention if you guys can help please! as i'm desperate to get to Brighton Breeze this weekend in it.

The engine is anything form a 1600-1776cc I was told it had a 1776 but I have my suspicions it not, its running a single weber carb and standard exhaust

1. First issue is that the carb seems to spit/pop when coasting, ie rolling down a hill with clutch down or when breaking from speed clutch down.

2. Second issue is that it stalls when stopping from speed, ie from 30mph to 5mph for a junction, It re starts each time. I'm wondering if it is idling too low? Its a Weber DFAV 32/36 can anyone give me an idiots guide on setting up the idle please.

3. There is an oil leak underneath engine towards the front where it joins the gearbox. I changed the flywheel oil seal and o-ring but its still leaking, push rods tubes look dry, there does seem to be a bit of oil leak from the big crank pulley dripping down and after the first journey it looks like some may have been flicked up the side of the tin ware. So other then the crank pulley oil seal are there any other areas prone to leak oil from on the engine? Do they/can they leak through the case join?

Lastly what oil do you guys recommend ? and which gearbox oil? I read somewhere EP80 is the one to go for?

Thanks hope you guys can help me out.. oh and it there is anyone local to me in Cheshunt Herts who fancies coming around and helping me you'd be more then welcome :)

When the vans running at idle does it sound like its ticking over to slowly?
If it sounds ok then the problem might be an air leak, my Beetle used to stall when coming to a stop, in the end i tracked the problem down to an air leak between the manifold and cylinder head.

issue 2
mine used to stall and pop and bang on overrun turned out to be exhaust blowing on a joint
cheap chinese empi *****
norm

Ok cool I put the exhaust on recently and it was a 'kin mission as it fitted badly (thanks again status)

I might redo the exhaust again and stick some paste on all the joints. If I have an exhaust leak would this effect the idle?

Do you have a vac advance distributor? If so check all the vac tubes. Have had a couple pop off before and this causes stalling when pulling up.
Hope you get it sorted ready for the trip down to breeze.

your engine sounds fine! all my vans have at some point required the foot on brake and on accelerator whilst stopping at junctions in the morning to prevent stalling - does it happen once warmed up or just cold?

maybe try stick your foot or something over the exhaust - if you can hear it whistling or exhaust escaping then you have a leak..

from my experience issue 1, air leak, check your exhaust, manifold etc, mine was a poor seal from exhaust to heat exchanger, loosened the joints, pulled them apart slightly and pushed in some gun gum paste, tightened back up, all ok. Issue 3 i had a same symptoms, the seals you mentioned were ok, but it was the cam plug seal, i didn't remedy this myself, so can't tell you more but that was it...

good luck

I did the foot over the exhaust test and it still ran (kind of) so I re-did the heat exchanger to exhaust clamps and stuck some gum gun in and tried the foot over exhaust when running again and it stalled it.. so hopefully the leak is sorted.

It seemed to have developed a bigger problem now the issue 1, it won't idle at all now, it runs beautifully if you hold the throttle down but as soon as you let go it dies :(

I screwed the idle screw in then out 2 an half turns tried screwing in a bit more but made no difference

The idle jet is clear and clean

I'm just about to check the timing

I wondered if it might be the throttle cable in the wrong position on the linkage?? but I can't find out how your supposed to set this?

Any other ideas guys? I'm all packed up ready for Brighton Breeze and its driving me mad! so please urgently any help would be greatly appreciated

Paul
