Hi People :) can you advise me on another little glitch? The bus is up and running well except a big annoying flat spot in 1st gear, like when taking off at lights etc it takes ages.

I have a 009 with electronic ingnition and a Bocar carb 1600 tp, engine was rebuilt by LP and has probably only done 100 or so miles, everything else is new, plugs leads etc

Its also absolutely gutless up any sort of hill

What can I do without spending too much cash to get her running right?

Cheers n Happy Saturday :)

I'd say the 009 is your problem. I had one and swapping to an SVDA massively improved pulling off and the performance up hills.

Cheers 67 :) sods law I sold an original carb to buy the electronic ignition hoping that would help  Oh well it will have to wait

my bus pulls well with a 009, have you got any fuel/air leaks from the carb? does your oil smell of fuel?

**edit. couldn't spell have  **

Although the 009 isn't as ideal and can create a flat spot, it sounds like a tuning issue. The Bocar carb isn't the best and can sometimes require some rebuilding (even when new), having said that I have one on my Beetle 1600 and after some work to get it working right, its working well. So i'd say check your carb is set up/working properly, jets clean etc, don't set the idle too low (around 850rpm is ok), and check your timing etc

Very well known issue.

Simply put without the thousands of posts on the subject.

The 009 is not a good carb for the Vw engine. But 'will' work with twin carbs.

Get a SVDA. And all your problems will go away and you'll get a better power curve, more torque and as if that wasn't enough you get better MPG too.

Tis what I did - 009 swapped for SVDA and a couple of months of playing with jets on the carb....

The transformation between the 009 and the SVDA was immense.

The 009 is an easy target IHMO. There's a dozen things to check before blaming the
distributor. From what I understand the vac part gives some extra oomph at start off and that's about it.

A thorough tune-up, timing, points (gap), tappets, mixture, plugs, leads and cap. is needed
before binning the dissy.

I agree.
The 009 has a bad rep but it's usually down to a poorly maintained engine.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I think a bit of tweaking with the dissy and carb might sort it for now. I know the plugs leads and electronic ignition is all good as they are all new. I think it needs a bit more time setting up, will let you know :)

My engine builders grind their own camshafts for twin port engines to avoid this problem. 34 Pict carb and 009 distributor straight on with no mods, no flat spot. After the engine is built to factory specs, the only cure I've heard of before is adjusting the accelerator pump arm to engage sooner. Doesn't cure it 100%, but at least keeps your head from busting the glass when the engine falls on its face!
