So the mechanics have put a new front axle on the crossover 72 and I went to pick it up. They have put a new exhaust and heat exchangers too.

The gears are all over the place. Loose and not where they were positionally before. Couldn't find them naturally and had to pull off in fourth. First gear, positionally before, was now reverse. Couldn't find first or second easily at all. Gearstick looseness and no guidance seemed to be evident. I picked it up off the forecourt after the mechanics had gone home. I've dropped it back on the forecourt and have been trying to find out on the internet what the problem may be. Can't find anything at all. The mechanics said that it would be a hell of a job changing the front axle. Any ideas what's up ?

may be that they have positioned the shift plate under the gearstick incorrectly (it's an easy fix - just loosen bolts holding on the gear stick in the cab and move the plate) - if it's not lined up properly gears are all over the place?

I'll pass that on too. Cheers. I've done work myself before on the bus, and do a lot of reading around the job to be done, but haven't the time to do this at the moment. I brought the T2 with the intention of keeping it alive myself......... and then my day job get's in the way. Trouble is....It's my only form of transport and I need things sorted. Frustrating really.

Agree with zed it's not a difficult job it's just the bits you need to remove that's the pain but it's not hard.
Are they a vw specialist or just a normal garage?

They're a normal garage and not VW experts. In the rural aspect that is the "part of Wales where I live" we have no local experts in the VW area. So I have to rely on the mechanics that look at everything that comes through their doors. That's why I wanted to do everything myself. But I'm a full time nurse taking on board an extra part time degree at present and "time to tinker, delve and fix the bus" is not an option. As said, I drive it to work everyday in the dub and the public transport buses here are few and far between. So my Dub is my best mate. (After my wife and kids that is).

They could maybe have put this plate on round the wrong way? The raised bit (which governs reverse) needs to be on the right hand side.
