Another one of those 'It's been apart for so long, I now cannot remember how it goes back together'

Which is the correct way to route the handbrake cables?

Option 1 and 2 both seem to rub against parts of the beam, steering idler arm or chassis cut-outs. :|

Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures.

Your cables look well positioned and not rubbing on anything. Although, my bus does not have such a wide opening for the cables, it just has those two round holes. I wonder if I need to get the grinder out :character0036: :?

My handbrake cable also routes the same as the other pics

Is your bus missing the hole? :msn4:

It might make a bit more sense once your handbrake is back in place.

Interesting, I don't think it is missing, but as your buses are '70 and '71, I wonder if there was a change in that cross-member of the chassis? :?: :?

Instead of the rectangular / oval hole, mine has two small ones. :|

Well, that is part of the problem. I offered up the handbrake back in the correct position and temporally held it there with a bar in the pin hole/fixing. Then I pulled the cables to see how much spare I had if they were fixed by the adjusting screws, but it seemed very tight. This made me look again at the routing and I realised that I couldn't remember which way they went.

It seems that they need to go through the small holes to match the others. I think I will have to get it all in place and attach the adjusting screws to see how close the cables are to rubbing on the chassis then.

Another point, I presume the cables on the buses shown are original ones? If so, they both have a rubber protective sleeve where the cable goes through the chassis. The cables I have are brand new, but they are missing this sleeve. Another example of poor quality parts I guess.

Only pic I have right now and it's not the best but this is my 68, bottom left hand corner the whole is the same as yours by the look of it, cable through the holes:

Thanks chap, nice underside ;) :tongue0022: I have not seen a chassis that clean without having to have loads of protection paint on it, like mine. :party0021:

So, back on topic, it looks like the '68s, possibly '69s have a different cross-section of the chassis there.

If you have time and don't mind, I would like another picture from a wider angle so I can see how close the cables are to the beam etc.. :poke: :sign0009: :msn4:

Well as you complimented the cleanliness of my underside how can I refuse?

I'll see if I can sort one out this evening for you

Any help?

Yes! Thanks, it confirms where I need to route them and I need to make some rubber protection sleeves for the cables when they go through the holes. :party0009:

So, off topic, why does your chassis look so good without any protection paint??! :? :party0047:

Think I can answer that one - Midland Paint Works? :msn4:

Ha! I don't think they did anything to the chassis, maybe just a spray of dinitrol. I'll ask them next weekend!

As far as we can tell the bus spent most it's life in and around Nevada so it was pretty dry :)

Not sure if you can make it out in the second picture but there is a spring on each cable holding it up. Not sure how important that is

I like my bus (UK RHD), but knowing what I know now, I would have chosen a dry import instead, I would have been driving it by now

NO! Totally missed those. :|

That may just be enough to keep them from the bottom of the cross-section holes, which, is where they are currently rubbing against. :?

I can try and get a better pic again tonight if needed

Haha, thanks, I might need one to see where the springs attach to, but it should be obvious the next time I am working on it.

I'll give you a shout :party0047:

I'm going to bump this up is that's OK- Would anyone mind supplying the indicated dimensions? From either model, I don't mind. What you've got there is a '68 only and "standard early bay" crossmember, whereas I have a late crossmember with only one central hole. Early handbrake, though- I'm a swine like that.

Once I get these handbrake cables routed, my engine running a little better, and a working washer pump, I will have a fully functioning van!!!!!!

Thanks chaps

Simon
