help needed main beam wont work

hi all
i need help i have a 1969 early bay L/H import cut a long story short two wires had come off in the indicator/main beam switch which would not solder back on so bought a new switch at dub freeze today ive fitted the new one and yet again main beam wont work its driving me mad thing i have noticed is the fuel gauge needle moves when trying to put main beam on all other functions work head lights / indicators / hazards just not the bloody main beam and MOT is due soon any help would be most welcome

you got a multimeter/tester mate? and does headlamp "flash" function work(assuming it came with flash function as standard)
