got my oil pressure and temp gauges all working now

i can now check how hot my oil is, as i thought HOT

on a short run, 10-15 mins, at 55, oil temp is inbetween 180 and 210 on my gauge, getting closer to the 210

any ideas on if it TOO HOT

finally blocked off my pre-heat risers, as ive twin carbs, its also a 1641

cheers

Cheap gauges are notoriously inacurate. Try putting the sender in boiling water to see what temp you show. If Ok, then if it stays within the bands you've already seen you should be OK to go. 1641 motors will always run hotter due to the thin wall cylinders. If you are not planning on using the heating air, then plugging the outlets from the fan shroud will give you more cooling air to the heads.

been 30 miles in mine today(as far as ive been in it)and it went up to 140 dc at 50 55mph,around town it never makes it up to100dc.im sure this cant be right? ive never had a gauge in any other of my aircooled beasts and regreat puting this in as i sit watching it.
so whats every one elses temp like when sat on the duel carigeway at 55to 60

Oh yes a 72 plate cooler with fan going in my beast and no temp gauge planned as you say strongy your eyes sit on it and you spend your time worrying.

To be honest it sounds a little hot on a run(though not as far out as you'd think) then again it has been fecking hot down my way so you add in the road temp etc, is it a sump or dipstick sender I cant remember? Boil some water and see what your reading with it?

Woah! 140degrees Celsius?! I thought 120*C was the generally recommended upper limit.

My VDO oil temp gauge normally sits around 100 to 110*C, on the freeway doing about 85-90km/hr. I calibrated it in boiling water at which point it said 99degC. In town it usually stays a bit under 100*C. If it's hot outside, the engine oil temps rise accordingly, and I can easily see 110*C just driving in town traffic when it's over 30*C. Once going up a long hill I got to 120*C, not in hot weather.

I'd be sceptical of 140*C, and if it's confirmed, then I'd be concerned for the motor. Oil that's been that hot may not be lubricating well anymore. And I wouldn't pay too much attention to it until you know it's working right. On my typeIV Bay it's easy to feel, with the accelerator response, when the motor's getting hot. Not sure with typeI's - anyone?

Cheers, A.

the senders inline on the pipe coming from the engine to the remote oil filter,

If you have remote oil filter......make sure its not fitted in the engine bay.
Same with oil cooler....

My 2276 runs at 160-180.....on a long run or pushed hard ill get 190-195....then fan cuts in anyway......

Should be ok up to 240 if you're usin ggood oil :)

OK Loxys long running oil temp experiments:
Mine usually runs between 190-210 F, on a hot day with a big hill it will creep up and over 220F, when driving to Hungary through Austria (lots of hills and some long steep climbs in succession) last year it went over 250F, fully loaded 3 kids, 2 adults been running all day etc etc. On the drive into work there is a fairly steady climb for a couple of miles (A465 up through the clydach gorge towards Brynamwr if anyone knows it) van speed 45-50mph max in 3rd gear, when I hit the top of that its usually just below 220F and will then rise to just over that, then will slowly start to drop again on the flat. If I drive up it slower in 3rd (35-40mph) the temp is higher at the top by ~10F.
This is the original 1600TP engine (50,000 miles on clock) in good condition oil pressure sits at 40 PSI (give or take as I have a 0-10bar sender for a 0-5 bar gauge - marked in PSI, just to add to confusion), it drops a little when the temp goes above 220F. Head temp reaches ~360F going up the same hill to work also has good pressure at startup & idle.
Interestingly the last 1/2 mile or so into work is up a steep 30mph limit road (Aberbeeg to Oakdale backroad), in second gear at 20-25mph the oil temp seems to stay the same, always assumed at low speed that it would increase more, perhaps revs are high enoug to provide good airflow.
Havent got a rev counter (yet).

Gauges are VDO - temp uses dipstick (I have shortened it so it doesnt bend reads a couple of degrees low using boiling water but not far off), pressure uses sender screwed into oil pressure switch hole, head temp uses ring connector around spark plug on #3 cylinder. Stock exhaust, carb, air filter, heating connected up etc figures above have been same for approx 10,000 miles.

Different oils:
Have tried a few (Duckhams, Morris SAE 30, Castrol something, Havoline, Unnamed Hungarian Oil cocktail) and not much difference, although Duckhams something or other (green stuff, will check what it was called) seemed to run slightly hotter. Currently using Havoline 10-40 or 15-40 bought from ASDA 5 litres for 8 quid, seems to be doing the job although I do tend to change my oil every 1500 miles as its so cheap.
Will try and find what all the oils I used were called & weights for you.

occasionally I even glance at the road when driving

EDIT: I was planning at some point hooking up the laptop to the gauges so that I can read temps/pressure etc & connect GPS to allow measurements based on location (hills etc) using memory map to provide a chart of altitude etc also then do a comparison on windows open/closed, roof rack or not etc etc, but then again I havent polished & fitted the alloys, fitted my 36 DRLAs, the eberspacher BN4, the turbo thomas exhaust, modified the cruise control to work with the dells etc etc so I may never get round to it....

you should work for McClaren F1  , or do ya already?
