Hi, I've had similar problems and the easiest way is to take the carb off first, quite straightforward really two 13mm nuts and disconnect the throttle cable but just make sure you remember to reconnect the electrical connections for points, choke & fuel solenoid labelling them isn't a bad idea.
It would be worth buying a refurbished kit for the carb if you haven't done this before, about £15 I think, also get a can of carb cleaner as this will blow out the crud and clean. Make sure you check the accelerator pump is clear on the side of the carb, I had muck in there and it would run but die at idle, fit a new fuel filter as well to stop it coming back.
Just take your time and its a satisfying job especially when the engine runs sweet again :mrgreen:
