I'll be picking up my new replacement bus this weekend and need to get it insured, I also need it to cover me in Europe for 8 months as I'm off on a trip of a lifetime around Europe. I've tried Cherished & they'll only cover 30 days, I've googled it but as you all know, a recommendation is always best :D

Strange that the UK is so insular. Insurance over here is automatically for all of Europe.

I am guessing it will depend upon the policy type. My understanding is that Cherished, like others in the market, deal in specialist insurance for non daily-driven vehicles and to keep the costs down restrict the euro coverage.

A standard car-type policy might well be capable of having an extended euro provision at the expense of things like agreed valuation, limited mileage, etc.

Just a guess though. :D

Just for the record, I broke down on the way to the Ben Pon show in Belgium and could I feck as like get in touch with the RAC, I tried every number on their website and none of them worked ! Was I pissed off stuck on a Belgian motorway !! I had to take a private outfit in the end which cost me an arm and a leg. Food for thought and make sure u have the right number ;-)

There's an article in the Sunday Times Drive supplement this week ( 4 th May 2014 )about long term cover in Europe. Admiral do cover but there is also a hotline to British Insurance Brokers Association 0870 950 1790. Hope this helps

Thanks robert, I'll tap up my neighbour for his one tomorrow :D

although this information is of absolutely no use to people who are dependant on breakdown recovery and agreed value contracts cover, i think that what you'll find in the very small print is that you are covered for an indefinite period for 3rd party liability with your green card certificate.

ie, legal minimum for the rest of europe.

this is in spite of what the brokers might be trying to bullshit you with their 30/60/90 days in any year cover crap.

but don't take my word for it, go straight to the european courts for the last word.

personally i think that if you have no idea how to fix your old van you shouldn't be driving it more than a few miles from home unless you have a very fat bank balance for the unexpected............. :p

Whilst I agree with this sentiment in principal you are forgetting that your insurance doesn't just cover your vehicle parts and labour.
For instance: I broke down in France a couple of years ago in my mates trusty Ford. We broke down on their equivalent of a bank holiday on the Friday, late afternoon.
Where we were was incredibly touristy and there was nowhere available to stay (fully booked).
My insurance got us a taxi to the nearest big city. The fare was over 200 euros. They checked us in to a hotel. No money came out of our pockets.
Because of the holiday period the car wasn't fixed until late Tuesday so we were given another taxi ride back to go collect it.

The problem with the car would have been something I could fix myself however there was nowhere open to get the parts, we were in the arse end of nowhere and we had nowhere to stay.

The insurance probably stumped up well over 1,000eur for our troubles.

We would have survived without but it would have been a s**t couple of days.

I paid nearly double what the guy I was travelling with would have bought in insurance and, quite frankly, I'm glad I did.

TL;DR? When travelling around Europe don't underestimate your insurance cover. It's not particularly expensive so don't scrimp too much.
