Hi all.
My wipers are blowing my fuse.

My auto electrician has said it's knackered. He's given it a bang, it does one rotation then blows the fuse.

If so I'm not looking forward to this, as it's a full dash removal to get the little devil out. Or at least I think so.

Problem started the other day. My radio would cut off then jump back on. Then two days ago my indicator relay burnt out. This was fixed by the electrician then a few miles down the road, as soon as I switch wipers on, the fuse popped and radio went on and off again?!

He has said when he bangs it the bushes free up, but when they don't the motor just blows the fuse.

Is this right?

I'm a bit dubious as he's done the front loom himself and can't even connect my fuel gauge.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Don't worry, you can change a wiper motor without removing the dash :)

Thanks.

What's the best route in and minimal parts I'd have to remove. It goes without saying my stereo would have to come out.

Hi,

My wipers blew a fuse when i turned them off, they were ok when running, just when switched off, i changed the switch, all fine ever since, odd one i thought.

Surely if the brushes are stuck or worn, if they dont make a connection, cant see why they would blow a fuse? It just wouldn't work?

Not too sure about your wiring by the sounds of things either.....

Hope you get it sorted soon,

Alistair

Cheers Alistair.

Yeah I was there when he used his tester on my switch and seemed to work fine.

At first it blew the fuse on just turning the switch. After a whack on the motor, it did one revolution then stopped and blew a fuse.

I'm no sparky so I'm just gonna remove motor and see if I can clean it up.

Fingers crossed.

While you've everything off, make sure you lube the spindles where the wiper arms bolt on.

The fuse may be popping if the the motor requires extra current due to the spindles being stiff...

dont know about changing wiper motor sounds like you need to change auto electician :msn4: could be tracks in wiper motor ,brass and they do wear and bend so causing bad conections and shorts.also ^^^^ check spindles ect and the wiring in the dash.terminals arnt insulated and some thing floating about could short.

Thanks all for comments.

So I can remove the assembly without removing whole dash?

Remove the wiper arms from the spindles, then undo the thin nuts that are threaded onto the spindles. Unscrew the dash top vents and remove the plastic pipes which are under the middle of the dash, there is a 13mm headed bolt which mounts the mechanism to the body, take that out and disconnect the wiring and after some jiggerling the whole wiper mechanism will come out :)

I would reconmend getting a new pair of rubber seals for where the spindles poke out the front though.

Good luck

Karl

Before you go to the trouble of removing anything, the linkage pops apart at the spindles, so you could reach under, pop apart (screwdriver/twist) and see if it's the spindles seized which it often is. If you have the rats nest of wiring a lot of people have under the dash with stereo and alarms etc getting the wiper mech out may not be as straightforward as it once was...

Cheers guys for advice.

I took the whole assembly out in the end. I have very minimal wiring and only two inner vent pipes so was only an hour.

Took off the motor case to find tonnes of carb build up. One of the bushes had come off and looks like it's shorting out. In at an alternator shop getting fixed up. Fingers crossed.

If you can't get it fixed I have a good spare one you can have for a tenner plus postage.

Brian

Cheers Brian, thanks for offer. Got it fixed today by an alternator shop.

Fitted new bushes and good as new.
