.......is this really bad,i plan to get a new block end of summer and rebuild it so was hoping i could run the van til then? :? is it possible or am i looking at serious trouble
note the new release bearing to combat the whining....but  likewise i also found this in bell housing

it was bone dry when i first had engine out couple of years ago and last summer did not smell of cats pissh am thinking it could be seal on back of flywheel maybe??.

You're worrying too much - 99 out of 100 have same push-rod tube seal leak. Those are cheap soft seals. The white ones are better, but if it's not pouring out which it clearly isn't, don't worry. :)

Difficult to say, but probably not that bad..

Has it been using much oil recently or is that just the cumulation of a small
leak over 2 years ? Any end float ? Can you identify the source of the leak ?

Might be that you can change all the obvious seals (oil cooler, crankshaft, pushrods
etc..) and then bung it back in. If then not using a load I would say go for it..

to tell a story....... :msn4:
when i first had the van i put it on the road(import so mot n registration etc)then i changed engine and gearbox oil(gear oil was well cloudy and thick, new looked totally different).
noticed a leak when working on van from the start but could not track it down. :x new to vw's so didnot want to disturb tooooo much(money was and still is very tight.
anyways, used van for couple/three months before winter set in of all about 250 miles if that due to no poptop canvas and rear 1/4 light frame rusted thru so leaked like a collunder  ,hence no long trips, then the following new year van went in for respray so i did not have it for 6 months and when i got it back the oil on the dipstick read roughly the same less 5mm on the stick and since i got the van back it has pretty much stayed in the same area(well within the lines) on the stick, same oil due to only covering about 300 miles since picking it up from the shop.
so all in all it does not loose that much,so you guys reckon to use the van then  what about the gearbox bell housing problem?
dave aka 67 panel kindly came over and noticed i have some endfloat and a knocking(from cold)but goes when engine is warm.

When I drove mine 100 miles recently, smoke was billowing from the vents from such a leak after I stopped. Same 100 miles later when I got home. Oil still bang on the top mark so why worry. :) Yes I could take it out at put the top end back together with new seals but I'm not feeling the need as I've still got my oil. Looks bad, but in reality I'm loosing virtually none unless th carbs making up for it by filling the sump with petrol. Think I better sniff the dip stick tomorrow. :msn4:

If you have end float it kind of goes with flywheel oil seal leaks. The more float, the less time the seals last. What to do? Does it leave a puddle on the floor where you park it? Does the clutch slip?

the clutch does not slip and there is a pool of oil in the drip tray, not alot but it always makes me check the level before driving away any distance.
