I finally have my Bus, it's a 1968 (F suffix) Westy pop top (although it wasn't converted by Westfalia until 69). I drove it back from Nuneaton to Worcester (approx 60 miles) and the 1600 single port didn't miss a beat. I'm a happy chappie, I found the LHD a bit strange but I'm getting used to it. Now the fun begins, first stop Amazon to pick up that 'Complete Idiot' VW book.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, and good luck to those who're selling their Bus.

Cheers

Simon

We shall be at Dubfreeze tomorrow, I already have a shopping list LOL

I'm wimping out though and going in the daily driver :( but only because the kids are going and it doesn't have seatbelts in the back yet.

So whats on the shopping list.....

and more importantly, tieing your earlier thread, what do you think of the engine so far.....

the 'idiots' book is a complete waste of time... funny, yes, but from a mechanical point of view if you are serious about learning about these things there's at least a dozen books should be higher on your list :shock:

*good luck*

What books are these? As I need all the help I can get.

Hiya Cod,

For starters anybody with a Bus should have the Robert Bentley Official Volkswagen Service Manual for Type 2. Take a look..........

http://www.amazon.com/Volkswagen-Station-Wagon-Bus-Official/dp/0837600561/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235282047&sr=1-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Haynes Volkswagen Transporter 1600 is also must have. The Haynes folks take a different approach to shop manuals than Bentley. Almost all Bentley material is originally from VW. Much of it was originally printed by Clymer but has since been appropriated by Bentley. Haynes has done all it's own research, features its own photos, and generally is an excellent companion to Bentley.

Here it is.....

http://www.amazon.com/Volkswagen-Transporter-1968-79-Haynes-Manuals/dp/0856966606/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235282258&sr=1-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Muir's "Idiot Book" has some excellent technical procedures. Arguably it has the single best piece on rehabbing CV joints. But it does contain opinions that are now considered out-of-date and some outright errors. Good for an entertaining read but not a shop manual in the truest sense of that term. Believe me, I know about this........my daughter used to work for the publishing firm which holds the rights to the Idiot Book. I got to know more than I ever wanted to know about the Idiot Book.

I've just ordered some US plates, I need new seals (although the guy threw in the bay window seal) all round but especially the rear hatch seal (it's leaking slightly). I need 2 rubber roof toggles, pertronix electronic ignition, new bumpers (not sure about those but I'm not into the overriders on them currently), door seals, interior rear view mirror (it's broken), tax disc holder, original curtains to match the cabin curtain (I know these are pretty rare but you never know) etc etc.

Here's what it came with which is pretty exciting.

Original:
Awning
Cabin curtains
Buddy seat
Mozzie net
uncut door cards.

To be honest, it's pretty tatty inside (needs new headliner) at the moment but it really is an untouched (overall) black plate. Everything's original (although I think the seats have been re-covered 'in keeping').

Re; Engine, it seems a strong 1600. I had no problems driving it for 2 hours and it cruised 60/65, no problem. It is losing some oil (common I'm told). I think the timing or points gap is slightly out too. It did seem to want to stall when I slowed down/changed down driving it last night though. I have to say from first impressions that I LOVE IT. Driving in the sunshine yesterday with cars flying by me I felt the need to sing! LOL

If anyone's at Dubfreeze, look out for me. I'll be wearing a blue Empi jacket with patches all over it and a large Corona patch on my back, oh I'll have two kids and a wife in tow too (my good lady will probably be moaning about the price of a piece of rubber lol)

Take it easy.

nice to see your happy, get the motor set up and running right before making the decission to jump up, the SP is a robust lump slightly under powered but that can be worked on, flowing the heads is a fairly simply task to eek out that little extra....

remember, it is the 21st century and with that company's current reputation for 'quality' you are walking about wearing the automotive equivalent of a 'poundstretcher' jacket :wink:

I think you will find that you just unbolt them & take them off ( then sell them for good money on here) - you may need a shorter bolt?
However a lot of people like to add them on, so maybe rather than selling them you should put them in a cupboard for the day you decide you really need a set of overrriders :wink:

cool, im gonna try get my dampners on today so i can cruise up one night in the week. yeah i love my avatar.
