Hi all,
I need an awning and have seen Khyam Driveaway advertised in Camper and Bus.
Any one got one or know if they`re good/bad?
Cheers Paul.

not sure what the driveaway looks like but the Khyam's are general one of the better awnings

I've also been thinking about this awning and to be honest for the money i'm very tempted the only thing putting me off is that it will be like putting up a big tent, i.e its a pole and sleeve construction not kyhams easy erect system that most of there other awnings tend to be, but i suppose thats why its cheaper than there other systems.
Were looking at this because it has the 4 man inner tent and as there will soon be 4 of us it seems a good idea and cheaper than nearly all of the 4 man options

I had a Khyam tunnel tent with fibreglass poles( basically the same as the driveaway but without the ability to hook it on the van), it got completed destroyed last May in high winds, the fibrelglass poles give too much and the tent gets flattened and the poles snap.

These were being shown at Oktoberfest last year, we had a look at it and I wasn't impressed, its basically the same as our old tent with an extra doorway to fit the van, personally I would spend the money on a Motorhome Family Sleeper, smaller but more rigid,

Just recieved a Khyam motordome sleeper new 2009 model, put it up in back garden excellant.
Did have a JK Hamberg awning (similer to khyam new awning),but that ripped, sold that and went for Khyam was expecting 2008 model but got sent the above   Lightening leisure nice chap, good service, good price as well, easily £30 cheaper than anybody else. :D :D

hi. i know someone with a brand new traveller 3 for sale, have a look

I'm another no for anything with the fibreglass poles after a similar thing Graham L, and the tent ended up looking like someone had stood on it. We ended up having to use one T25 multivan , bit odf a squeeze with 2 adults and 2 kids!
If I was buying a Kyham, it would always be the easy up system type, and any type of awning would have to be poles for me. :)

Just read the feature on this awning in C&B and after looking at various sites i think this is the awning were going for.
I know its a pole and sleeve assembly but the closest 4 man inner tent awning from Kyham is nearly £450 so almost £200 difference  , not going to do anything until Bus types though as hoping that someones got 1 on display (at a show special price! ;) )or someone camping is using 1 so i can ask questions

Froggy

Fair enough money is money but a strong wind will break the fibreglass poles and rip the tent, I ended up having to buy another tent for the family holiday because of this and I made sure I bought a steel poled tunnel tent and its far far stronger.

I know the other Khyams are expensive but worth every penny in my opinion especially with the ease of erection compared to a tunnel style tent, you will need at least 2 adults to put up a tunnel tent as its nearly impossible to put one up on your own.

Fair enough Graham, like i said i'm not doing anything until Bus types and i know money is money but i dont want to splash the cash on 1 of these and then have to buy another at a later date so maybe better buying a good 1 1st time 8)
Can anyone recommend an awning with a 4 man inner tent?
I know we have a camper with a full width R&R but with our daughter and 1 on the way we really want the space of a big awning incase of poor weather so that there is still room for the kid(s) to play without getting under our feet ;)

Hi All! Hope you don't mind me butting in to your discussion on awnings but I can probably give you some (impartial!??) advice.
The Driveaway from Khyam is new this year but as you can imagine, sales have been brisk because of the price and size. As has already been said, it is a BIG awning and is really perfect for families especially if you are looking at staying somewhere for more than just a few nights. You need to consider that given its size and construction that you don't lumber yourself with dealing with a monster if all you want is a bit of space to put a table and chairs. Otherwise it makes the whole camping experience a chore rather than the relaxing, stress free adventure it should be. If you want a 4 sleeper from Khyam though you are looking at either the Sleeper or the Driveaway. Price maybe the driving force in which case there is no choice! The Sleeper is a great awning. Not as big a living space as the Driveaway but very quick to put up, take down and pack away. Both are made with the same Khyam quality so there are no issues there.
Fishbrain will have the Driveaway awning on display at Volksworld this month and at BusTypes. Come and see us there and have a chat! Great forum by the way!
Cheers

Cheers mark, will look out for fishbrain at bus types.
Cost is an issue but also needs to be a 4 man sleeping arrangement so it really is down to these 2 awnings unless JK or anyone else has something different.

Thanks for reply Mark and every one else ;)
I shall look forward to seeing the Driveaway awning at Volksworld show.
It`s certainly got me thinking whether i need one that big!
Cheers Paul :D

let me know what you think of the driveaway awning. I cant make Volksworld but will be at bus types. A heads up might persuade me one way or the other.

I just bought the Khyam sleeper from the Camper Shop - 2009 model at £359

well worth the money as I have some rubbish awnings in the past

we have just bought the driveaway awning and went away this weekend for first time. Must admit it took hubbie 2 hours to get it right but in future will be much quicker. It was very windy and had few probs keeping it attached to the van but other than that its a great awning especially for famlies or when you are away for a week or two. we would like a smaller awning for our weekends away as well. Greedy? Want it all!

hi, when you said it was difficult keeping it attached to the van, do you have "figure of 8" fixing thing as I bought a fixable pole for mine so it can be attached a bit stronger?

cheers

I have a small kyham, only used it twice last year. Even I can put it up easily, well worth the extra cost, miles better than the tunnel thing I had before.
