Ive currently got the dash apart to sort out my heating control cables and thought about lubricating the speedo cable whilst it is disconnected

But before I go ahead I thought I would check it's ok to do as I know with some cables you shouldn't lubricate them as it can make the inner case swell and then the cable jams.

If it's ok to do what do you recommend to use wd40, engine oil??

Thanks in advance

id go for engine oil rather than wd. wd has that kind of dryness chaffing kind of thing going on  . lubs for a few minutes then drys out. og 3 in 1 oil dripped on the cable and it should find its way

Don't use wd40 as it actually gets rid of the grease. You could use a PTFE base like GT85 but a new cable is pretty cheap too.
