Right, so big problems, and need some help urgently!

On the way to Plymouth, and I developed a missfire. Got onto the ferry and crossed to Roscoff. After about 10 mins driving in france, loads of back firing followed by a loss of power, pulled over and after some digging realised that the coil was fried.

Thankfully had a replacement so changed that along with points and condenser. All good. Drove about 250km towards Le Mans and suddenly same issue!!? Backfire loss of power! Pulled over, and seemed to be same issue, but no spares so time for euro recovery.

An overnight in a hotel and a hire car got us to destination and kids started holiday. Whilst bus in garage for repair.

Turns out my analysis seemed correct and the garage replaced the points, condenser and coil - 200 euros.

I drove up to Le mans today to collect the van, checked before paying, work definately done.

Have driven around 200km from Le Mans to Tours and the same thing has happened again!!!!

Any ideas? What could cause a coil to fry 30times. 2 brand new!?

I am at a loss and running out of money!!!

HELP please!!

Hi, Only suggestion / comment I can come up with is alternator / generator not regulated correctly! coils don't normally burn out that quick unless there's too much power running through them! First thing to check is the regulator. Hope that helps? Cheers, Nick

EDIT, secondly, check engine earth strap / gearbox earth strap! just a thought!

Repeating my post on tech section in case you didnt see it :-

Make sure there is only one wire on the neg side of the coil that goes down to the points.

I have seen this problem before where wires like the cutoff valve or the choke have been connected to the wrong side of the coil.

Excess voltage can burn out a coil but that kind of voltage would also blow bulbs in the lights and indicators etc.

Bays dont have a ballast resistor coil. In fact any 12 volt coil from any car will work fine.

Let me know how you get on - I'm about 4 hours drive south of you, theres also a very good vw specialist close to here if you get down as far as the Lot.

So.....been a bit quiet on here, recovering from my French disappointment.....

However - having locked the van away for a few months, my enthusiasm has been revitilised and it's time for the repaint and resto.

So here he is - strip out has started:

Very little rust issues at the moment - but the front end definately needs some work.....

The debate is.......couple of repair panels using as little repro metal as possible or a whole new front clip.....which kind of seems excessive.

I will keep updates on here from now on - exciting times :p

Hello All,

I am back again...... so after numerous hurdles, including a divorce I am back in the garage with the bus..... with one intention.

Renovate and sell.

If you know anyone who may be interested in a very nice, finished '69 tin top then get in touch and we can start talking.

No idea on how much yet but probably going to be looking for mid to late teens when complete.

See previous photos for starting place, any tin issues have been replaced and we are due for paint in the next few weeks.

I'll keep you all updated of progress.

So again... work and stuff has ddelayed progress but things are moving on. Most of the paint os on the van and now it's all about sorting the bits to go back on. Today has been spent stripping down, polishing and rebuilding the jalousie windows. New seals, stainless steel screws to boot.

I think they've turned out well.

This build thread has lots of twists in the plot!!!!
Nice bus mind!!!
Just a shame life gets in the way of restos sometimes!?!
Mine ended up taking 2& 1/2 years, then I had to sell it once finished too
Good luck getting there now!??!

Cheers mate... yeah its been a bumpy ride. Back on it now though.

So today I got on it - somewhat inspired by my new toys:

Started by stripping the engine down:

Ended up with this:

Tinware is now off for a blast and powder coat:

Also stripped down all the quarter light frames, chrome for a polish, black for a paint:

My dad always told me that things come apart a lot easier than they go back together - we'll see how it goes.
