spoke to a chap tonight who had his own garage solely working on aircooled vehicles across the board and he said that cylinder #3 always runs hotter than the rest and is usually the first valve to drop as a result, therefore he said fitting a 009 dissy helps combat this because they retard the firing on cylinder#3 slightly thus prolonging the life of the engine.

if this is right then why dont all the other dissy like svda to name but one (dont know the others but they are out there) have the same characteristics in retarding #3

he also said about setting the vavles by not using feeler gauges and just setting them just as they touch   :?
again is this right??

answers on a postcard.

regards.

My old grandad(great uncle??) always said #3 went first like!!!
Cos it got hotter than the rest, 99,000 he reckoned !!!
He didn't believe in 009s tho!!!!

That first pic was taken at Biggar too John, about 2004????????
Coincidence ???? spooky!!!

There was a chap on VZi asking a while ago if people would check their distributors, as he had come across others with a small retard on cylinder #3 too.

It is mentioned here that some earlier (vac only) ones do:

http://www.vw-resource.com/carb_dist.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's also mentioned here: http://bobhooversblog.blogspot.co.uk/2006/11/vw-flaming-distributors-batman_24.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - around 2/3 of the way down.

Either way, don't worry too much about it. And don't go to a 009 for that reason - they aren't an improvement over a fully functioning stock setup. :)

With a late engine with doghouse cooling, the #3 cylinder problem is not as great as on earlier engines, I believe.

On SP engines No.3 runs hotter because the cooling air passes through the oil cooler before getting to the cylinder, so essentially it's warmer air and doesn't cool aswell. The doghouse cooler was introduced to get around the problem.

This ^^

On earlier engines, without the doghouse cooler, the dissys all retarded no3 slightly. That is why the dissys have the mark on the body denoting which one is cylinder number one. This was to ensure the slight retard was on No.3 rather than any other cylinder.

The slight retard on No.3 was dropped with the introduction of the doghouse oil cooler. The mark for No.1 cylinder on later dissys is still there, though no longer relevant/vital.

Nearly all engines, including water cooled, diesels, all number of cylinders, always have one cylinder that runs slightly hotter than the rest. For instance, in most straight 4 cylinder water cooled engines, it is number 3.
