New engine!!

Major engine failure on way to our planned 2 week tour of Scotland. RAC recovered and transported back home while we hired another van and continued our holiday. Our trusted garage has advised we will need a new engine which is a bit of a blow.

I’m looking for advice about where to source a new engine from and any not too expensive upgrades to increase power a bit at the same time.

You can try Abel Atafonso or Hector Howe, both have good reputations on here.
But beware a new upgraded engine is £5k minimum.

What happened to your engine, and was it an old engine?

+1 can recommend Abel. I’ve had my engine from him for five years and still running sweet.

Customer did not pay. Afonso Motors.

100% Hector Howe, not only is he a close friend of mine but he’s also a top notch engine builder. I’ve fitted many of his engines to various vw’s, all flawless including the 2276cc nitrous engine in my own bus and I’ve recently fitted a tuned up 1600 into my girlfriend beetle.

If hector is busy then another builder I’d recommend is Paul Bate in Southend (flatfourperformance)

I'd get a second opinion on the engine as it may not be a total loss, who is your trusted garage?
Is it you that broke down near Lancaster?

Make sure you do your homework on the engine builder(see my other thread on here) Don't go for the cheapest like I did and ask lots of questions before deciding who is building your engine.

I built a 1776 once and on its maiden voyage, my cast counter balanced crank snapped and destroyed the engine. It happened after just starting the engine after a short pub lunch.
Problem turned out to be that the crank had been dropped and hence had a micro crack. It took a year but eventually the place where I bought the bits from send me a full crate of replacement parts.

Thanks for everyone’s advice. Now back from holiday and will source a new engine. The trashed engine is old and I know was rebuilt at least once by the previous owner over 14 years ago, so can’t complain too much.

It was my impression that crankshafts & connecting-rods were forged rather than cast, owing to the high cyclic stresses they had to endure!?!

Yes, this is what you get for buying cheap. It was a cast Scatt counterweighted crank.
