Oil in air filter?!

Hi all and seasons greetings.

For those that read my last nightmare thread about being ripped off..... My luck continues.

She now backfires and looses power above 30.

Nice man from AA came and discovered new spark plugs blacked up. Told me it must be running rich.

When he looked in air filter it was full of oil? It was only about 6 months old.

I left it off and after a few miles with him following, she began to sound better.

He has advised that I get new plugs but a better air filter.

I have standard pict 3 carb. Any ideas on what filter? Last one was a silver one from German and Sweedish. Nothing fancy and about £12.

Youve a non standard small type air filter thats full of oil? I guess its connected to the oil filler breather though?
Sounds like excessive crankcase pressure blowing oil though the filter and into the carb, and creating a mix too rich to burn properly ...

Fit a proper oil bath filter,,,, oh and when you get one pick one up for me too :lol:
Been meaning to remove the same gsf shiney tat from my engine for a year now :roll:

I'll look into the oil bath. I take it that's the big black plastic one?

Spoke to an old friend today who used to be in the game and gave me some good advice.

Told me to get a pancake filter and put the breather tube into a can as an oil catcher. Makes sense to me.

Do you have a metal stand in your engine bay to mount the filter? They're part of the bodywork. Yours might have the pancake because someone previously had a twin carb engine in there and cut the stand out. You do need this stand, though no doubt you could conjure something up.

If you do have the stand and it's round, you need an metal oil bath filter. If it's a thin sticky out thing, you need a plastic cartridge type air filter.

If you don't have a stand, you could get either type and source a suitable stand from a breaker to weld in.

Can you take a photo of your engine bay so we can have a look at the set up?

Pancake filters are total shite, you'll have problems with carb icing at this time of year especially.

You shouldn't really need a catch can for the oil breather, there is something that needs investigating there, knackered piston rings for example. Would make a lot of sense to do a compression test on the engine.

Couldn't fit one on my SC though as there wasn't enough clearance. Not sure if a bus engine bay is slightly taller?

What causes the pressure :?:
Could answer a problem thats cropped up on mine after the rebuild :roll:

has it got a pattern oil filler/breather looks like the og one cos the breather hole in them is 1/2 the size of the og one and causes back pressure(more aftermarket pattern sh*t) :roll:

So no ones spoted the obvious mistake :msn4: the oil filler /breather is a later type and there is no vent tube going down ,at the angle its fitted oil will collect in the breather part and it cant get back to the sump so will got blown up breather pipe to carb.what do you lot think???

Yeah the fuel filter is orange in the clear plastic holder. Is this not right?

I can also see what is said about the oil filler. Whats your views?
