Its just an idea at the moment but was talking to the wife (i know how stupid of me :wink: ) about the bay and how we could make it a daily driver (save money buy using it rather than paying for a second car), its running a stock 1600 TP, anyway the thing that we are thinking is that we sell my current daily (1275 mini italian job), after paying off the holiday we would be left with about a grand to play with.
What would you do?
Thinking of maybe rebuilding the engine to a 1641 and twin carbs or a 1303 IRS gearbox kit to improve cruising (especially with petrol costs rising), hitting it with a lowering stick, etc etc
What other options are there available? Type 4? Diesel conversions (do these exist for a bay?)

Due to a change in plans i now have a tax and tested subaru legacy 2.2 complete car to drive away!

130,000 on the clock with near on full service history...its a 2 owner car from new and has been well loved.

It comes with a DS adapter plate and custom 200mm flywheel machined to run a T25 bearing plus a kennedy stage one pressure plate

Car is in Swindon SN2 5JE

Just tried to register but it wouldn't let me.

its got me thinking though that maybe a grand isn't enough for a full engine conversion so maybe it will have to be other options, ie, 1303 g/box - alloys - carbs - 1641 rebuild etc etc
 
a grand is plenty for alternate engine Fella...you will be looking at more for the aircooled bits you have listed :)

Also try the alternate engine forum on VZI..loads of helpfull guys on there.Ive got a mate who has just replaced his scooby engine for a 19 TDI engine to run on Bio fuel..Real helpfull Guy who i could ask if its ok to pass on his number to you if you like? :)
 
The list was just me trying to get ideas, maybe 1303 and alloys, twin carbs and lowered, lowered and alloys etc
None of its certain yet, still need to MOT the bay, then decide, just trying to find out what i could do / get for a grand
 
My 2p's worth - don't go down the 1641 route. The cylinders are basically the same as a stock 1600, but have been machined down by an extra 1.5mm to get the larger pistons in. This leaves a much thinner wall on the cylinder which results in them being far more prone to heat distortion. This is the same reason why no one runs 1835s (though I think you can now get thick walled cylinders for this size). I'd choose a 1600 over a 1641 any day of the week.

If you want more hp from your engine you'd be better off upgrading to dual carbs - the flow through the manifolds should be much better meaning you can get better mpg too.

Totally agree, just spend about £500 on twin carbs and a rolling road session, then make sure that all of the small bits are up to scratch.........All new cables, stainless exhaust, full service inc new HT leads, plugs etc and maybe new bearings etc, this will keep you going for a few years :wink:
 
if its a daily driver then opt for 36 IDFs as you get the best of both, good fuel econ. (with prices still on the up this would be important) and a good power increase over stock. Spend a few pound on a port job and get even better results.

You could buy the OG webber carbs for £100 used in good condition, offset manifolds/linkage/airfilter kit from CB performance for @ £80 and get it setup jetted and rolling roaded for @ £150, i think thats cheap for a 10+ hp increase and probably better fuel economy if set up correctly.
 
Starting to think maybe a twin carb set up would be better for everyday use, although still looking into the 1303 gearbox / irs set up as i do mainly motorway miles to and from work so the lower gear ratios / higher cruising should be better on fuel anyway!

For a little over a grand why not lpg your van and halve your fuel bill......

then spend the rest of the year playing with the other bits as and when the cash comes in....

Never even thought of a LPG conversion. :oops:
Has anyone got any sites/info on these and where can it be done?
Anyone currently running a LPG van? Is there any noticable difference? What is needed to convert? Did it affect your insurance?

Like the idea of a LPG, would save the hassle of a full engine conversion allowing me to stay true to the AIRCOLLED roots VW intended! 8)
