hello all.

Having problems with my horn, as in it goes off when not wanted :oops:
MOT on friday! was just wondering wether it is possible to wire my existing horn to a separate switch, as a bodge for the mot.

The wire that goes up the the column is actually glued to the base of the column instead of going up inside it, which would make rewiring easier! has anybody already rewired theres using a switch? if so how?

Quite simple to do.

Using a meter or bulb and bit of wire confirm which is the positive terminal on the horn, it should be black. Then disconnect the other terminal and run a wire up from the disconnected terminal on the horn to a button on the dash and then from the other side of the button to earth.

All this is assuming you have a good supply to the horn in the first place, which I can assume you have by the fact it goes off when you don't want it to.

It is worth remembering that the horn has live fed to it permantly with the ignition on. It`s switched on the earth side ;)

This may be an old post, but my horn has stopped working. I checked and I'm getting 12volts accross it all the time when the ignition is on, but no horn noise? Could this be the horn is knackered?

When you say you have 12v across it, do you mean you have a meter connected to both horn terminals and it shows 12v? Or do you mean you have your meter connected to chassis and either terminal and both are showing 12v.
If the latter, then that is correct and your horn is most likely OK too. Simple test, disconnect both wires off the horn, see which one is at 12v, should be black, reconnect that one to the horn only and earth the other horn terminal. the horn should sound.
If so, then you are loking at an earth problem, which is most likely, and you need to trace the earth pathy looking for the break. If I recall correctly, the route is, down the other wire which goes up through the steering column centre, connects to the horn button, which earths the horn to the steering column which connects to earth at the bottom, at the floor.
 
Ahh, I had 12v across the two wires to the horn. I will double check what you mention tomorrow.
 
12v across the 2 wires would indicate that you have a permanent earth on the horn switch side which would sound the horn permanently, unless it is broke. Come back tomorrow with some more test results and hopefully we can get this sorted easily.
 
It seems like an earthing problem based on doing the tests you describe. I can get the horn to sound with the one wire connected and earthing it. So will see if I can find the problem.
 
One of the most popular places for the horn circuit to fail, apart from the button itself, is the connection at the bottom of the steering column, especially if the cup thingy has been moved to install mats or carpets.
