Much as I love to see genuine patina and all that, I have to say I find these creations quite interesting and a bit of fun.
These are kids on a budget, taking a cheap car and modifying it to get attention ... concourse costs big cash, so this is the alternative. As long as nothing rare is being ruined then so what?
The majority of owners of patina'd VWs are well outside the 'yoof' demographic, and thats financially driven. Let em have some fun with what they can afford, I reckon.

:)

rat look has evolved from the rodders that ran out of funds and wanted a 'real' potentially 'gnarly' car - kinda going along with the rock and roll rebel theme, almost anti establishment.........to running cars that are just out to shock in a society where we are force fed a new car every 3 yrs. The original hoodride VW's were in some cases dangerous and hadn't had the time and money that say slamwerks now provides.

Patina or age related wear isn't ratlook - a primered with rusty sills and that 'dug up' look is.......

for example Mr OLDbug's bus he's bringing over is 'worn' and has 'patina' but isn't a ratlook vw by any stretch - all imho of course.....

I also think if the lads are not causing any actual harm or running dangerous cars - and lets face it looking like they do they'll get 'tugged' quite often and checked I would have thought.......? leave them to it..it's their money and cars...

there are a few of these driving around Kings Lynn at the moment, always make me smile

the only saving grace with this is, if you sand the paint off a rover 45 and encourage it to rust in two weeks the rust will be soo bad it will be writen off  . these just dont look good do they? ex motability cars, in crap colours, encouraged to look worse. they'll be all grabbing each others a pillars next and pulling burn outs :? . i wouldnt pay the £2k these young lads have to pay for insurance to drive one of those sheds.

OOOOH! another slant to the story........How can an old git like me know anything about the youth culture. When I was in that category there is no way I would have listened to anyone over 25 about what was cool and what was not
Having looked at some of the cars in the show and shine at Dubs at the Castle owned by "youths"......they know what is cool. I think for me it is about how it is done and quality is quality. I think my first car (Mark 2 Escort) would have fallen into the "Ratlook" category - unintentionally of course.

Personally, I really like rat rods, patina, or original paint, but only on classic sheet metal cars and motor bikes, like these: i.e. http://www.ratrodmagazine.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. To each their own. Everyone has their niche. Mine just happens to be aircooled veedubs and in my opinion the whole world should be into them and love them as much as I do! Ha! if they don't, I just don't understand why not. :?:  But again, to each their own. I don't see the interest in these "rat" lookers but for some reason or another it has a following and there's a website to prove it. :? I'll stick to aircooled. ;)

Each to their own,but personally don't get the point of sanding modern cars to let them rust.Rat rods tend to be a modern take on the 50's rods ex servicemen used to build after the war,but now they tend to be a lot lower and a bit more knarly. One of my fav's

"The members of rat-look.com though, have such a refreshing view-point, that this movement could very possibly be the next big thing..."

what?!? a corsa with a rusty bonnet?!? i dont think so!!!!

What an absolute pile of Shit.... I fffing hate the term '' Rat Look '' and if anyone ever applys that term to anything I build i shall punch them in the face

Rat Look to me conjures up images of badly maintained cars/buses that are usually in primer and just about limp to shows and back again spraying oil up the back of the vehicle and anything that follows it.....

These idiots in there Ford/Vauxhalls/Minis are just looking to shock people and give the police an excuse to pull them over . The trouble is that usually has a knock on effect that the police then pull anything thats modified because to them its an easy collar and they cant tell the difference between a safely ( Read Expensively) modified vehicle and a battered Corsa thats had the springs chopped and is bordering on Mot Legal. Also unless you know your MOT/Traffic laws most of the time you will believe the police officer thats pulled you over well because there the Police .

I build Patina'd cars usually in OG paint and they wear the History the've earned on the outside , There maintained better than most modern cars and are 100% MOT legal . Having been pulled more than once in the Gadget Bus and the Officer asking me why Im getting out of the passenger door , You can see what were all Up against

Hopefully like the Hoodride load of B#llocks a few years ago it will all disappear as quick as its started

there are some very good and some very bad examples.

the worst i can think off is that Mk3 (?) polo with wire wheels and all sorts of shit stuck to it. I think it even had PVC tape over the headlights  . I'm sorry if anyone is offended but it really irks me some of the faux ratters out there.

i think we should let em have the term 'rat look' as thats what they are! we can keep 'patina' and 'OG' and the coolness that goes with that! when 'rat look' stems into the vw scene its usually a case of some rusty hunk of a beetle, that like gadget says, barely has an mot! to be fair... this term is mainly used on ebay when in conjuction with a vw.... basically trying to make a shed of a ride seem cool to potential bidders!

lame!

Shat look???Not for me,the idea of forced rust is a no go area,Patina however is a diff thing all together,OG paint, nice rims looks great,as does a decent resto, anything inbetween i struggle with..........
