Getting ready to put the engine back in my van and was cleaning up the support bar tonight.

It has some damage to the seam on the underside, and the whole bar looks to be slightly bent toward the right end.

What I am wondering is are they normally completely straight or do they have a bit of a bend at the right hand end?

Didn't have a chance to get any pics tonight but can arrange them if needed

This bar was on the van when I got it with an engine mounted and no obvious problems which is why I am wondering if my bar might just be normal

Thanks, JOSH

Our '68 was a bit like that. Someone had probably hit something while reversing and bent one end slightly. Make sure the drain holes are clear in the botom seam and pump it full of waxoyl. Shouldn't be a problem when re-fitting.

be careful dude

i had to change mine as mine had snapped, only noticed after i got back from cornwall trip(150miles)

got back and engine was sitting very low, but lucky that i went to cool campers and he sorted me out a cali 1. so i cleaned it up and painted it

The support bar should be symetrical. If its not then its been damaged.

If the distortion is only a tiny bit then it wont really make much difference but if its a lot then it will be a pig to refit and will put unnecessary strain on the engine mounts and allow more engine noise to be transmitted into the vehicle.

Thanks for the replies

Bar seems pretty solid - have given it a good clean and will paint and Waxoyl the inside as recommended.

The bar is definitel not symmetrical, but not too badly distorted, and as mentioned, it fitted the old engine OK

Will try to get some snaps and see what the consensus is

Look about the same shape ours was. It's been hooked on something solid while reversing. I just knocked the small bits back into some sort of shape and welder the edges up.

Thanks mate,

did as you said - took a big hammer and straightened the edges as best as able, then got a mate to weld the edges where they seemed to have split a little

will paint it and job should be done
