That's it I'm baffled!

I'm about to instal my new engine. It has full flow fitted and I need to get an external filter and I'm advised to add an external oil cooler.

There's just so much out there I don't know where to start? I only need a small cooler I think as its a mild 1776.

Once I have all these bits, where is the best place to mount the filter? Engine bay or under battery tray?

Thoughts would be appreciated!

I would spend the money on a pressure relief pump cover and just try with an external filter - you've done the hard bit. My 1745 runs perfectly fine without a cooler - I would try it first. Of course this means getting something to measure as best as possible the engine temp.
Overcooling is bad - not as bad as over hot of course!

Sorry for being dim but what does a pressure relief pump cover do?

My full flow is tapped into the block and not a pump take off. Does that make a difference?

Where did you get your filter head from and locate it?

Cheers

is it a Laurie Pettit engine? EDIT the pressure relief pump - stops the filter popping under cold oil pressures

Normally the pump is the out, the pump is outlet is blocked off and is forced out of the pump cover - then out to a remote filter [or sandwich block to also take in a remote cooler] and then back in on the block ?

Laurie does his both on the block?

I think that you'll find that most of the filter heads are the same quality - think mine is a CBperformance one - it's mounted under the left hand battery tray - I also ran the pipes with a fibreglass sheething over them to protect from the exhaust....

Yes it's one of Laurie's engines with the tapped block so I guess a pressure relief pump housing is not needed.

He wrote down a load of codes for me which included golf filters. It seems many use FRAM HP1 but they must be made of gold as they well pricey.

Laurie recommended think automotive for parts but it seems the EMPI stuff which is around is half the price. I know you get what you pay for though. There's just so much around that's the problem.

Do whatever Laurie says - Think Automotive is the best - swept Tee's do not inhibit flow, their oil hose is very good quality.
Including oil filters - I use one from a mk3 Golf diesel from memory - excellent price - HP1's are not as good as they used to be.

I've just ordered mine today from think auto. It's a 16 row with an OT/1 thermostat and a RFH4 filter head which Paul miller (Harry harpics) told me I need to run the 1914 he is building for me. It was about 250 the lot.

very good point Jon! Think auto it is!

I've been looking and I may start with a filter head with temp take off and run a temp gauge to see how warm it gets. I can always add the cooler if necessary later.

DONT fit the filter in the engine bay fit in under the battery tray that way it is hanging in the breeze and gives a cooling affect, if fitted in the engine bay it is radiating heat into what is meant to be a cool zone.

The golf filters tend to pop in the winter in high pressure cool running (have had this issue myself)

The Fram Filters have a pressure valve built in so don't pop as easy.

I would look at a servicable oil filter takes away the expense of a service, then it's just the cost of the Oil ;)

It's worth a bit of research on the filters - some of the cheap ones have a once-off bypass. Too much pressure and it pops internally so you've no filtration until you replace it. I use Mann filters for the Volvo B18 & B21 engines. They're good quality and don't burst under pressure on cold startups. I've also used Subaru branded diesel oil filters which are decent quality too.

I mounted mine under the battery tray, I thought it was going to be flimsy but its nice and study and easy to change. Works perfectly and I got my FRAM filter for £8.50 from eBay :)

*edit - your engine your rules but I've a 1776 that runs perfectly fine without an expensive cooler, just full flowed and well fitting tinware.
