Replacement starter motor?

Morning everybody

I’m looking for a replacement starter motor - I’m having to tap the current one with a hammer to get it to turn!

Any tips/recommendations?

I bought one from West Lancs Auto Electric Retail limited, last year £85 delivered.

It is a bit smaller than the original, but fitted perfectly and worked well so far.

Could be your solenoid is sticking - but if you get a new starter motor that will be included.

It''s a job getting the old one out - that final bolt behind the fan shroud is a bugger.

You wouldn't regret buying a ratchet ring spanner ...

It might be the bush in the bell housing, costs about £1-2 but a pain to fit with the engine in place. Even if you change the starter you 'should' also change the bush.

If you pull out the starter motor you can test quite easily with a 12 volt battery - there are lots of Youtube videos showing this (does not need to be VW specific). Then you can test the solenoid and motor separately (and together...).

You can test with SM in-situ, but not so easy and you have the adding possibility of running yourself over !

If it’s a Bosch, get it refurbished. If it’s a Chinese copy, chuck it in the bin and buy another!

The heritage £80 unit seems to be good. Fitted it last week but it does say u need the Buttys bits captured nut as a standard one doesn't fit but I found that not be the case. The one I bought with the motor didn't fit where as my standard bolt did. As to the bush I got some great advice from Starbuscuit to use a 12mm tap to get the old one out which was very easy. Putting the new one back in was not. In the end because I dropped the bush into the bell housing I took the engine out and pressed it in using a a nut and bolt and a couple of big washers.
