Hi,
I'm in the process of buying my first early bay bus just need a couple of help with costings. I've tracked down a 71 LHD Westy in white. At the moment it has no engine and it will need a respray job to get it up to a good standard. How much does a engine cost bearing in mind I don't have one to exchange and how much will a decent respray cost? Any answers gratefully received. Cheers.

Wow that was a bit pricier than I thought :shock: Would it be cheaper if it had an exchange engine?

Engines from £500 and paint from £1500 depending on how much body work required Glass out etc.
Nothing to do with me but quick search brought this up

you could try one of these http://www.justkampers.com/search2?location=shop&method=match_all&keywords=vege+engines" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hand paint it, put in a nice used motor and drive it, tinker with it,

Then fall head over heels in love with it :mrgreen:

Then lavish thousands on it when it really needs it :lol:

Cheers everyone. Budgeted 5K for decent a LHD bus and I guess the same to fit engine and decent respray. If it has the original interior then I can do the rest as time and cash allow. Got to get one now cause the missus is sick of me talking about it for the last year. :lol:

HOPE YOU FIND WHAT UR LOOKING FOR.

Why don't you just buy a £10K bus that's already sorted? Rule of thumb is you'll get better for your money this way, or put differently, you never get back the money you put into a bus.

Bertiethe bus - I'm based in Cardiff
Zedbed - I rather do it this way because I can a least see what I'm getting and put my own personal touch on it . I have seen a few 10K buses but have one thing or another missing. I think realistically I probably have to pay 12-15K to get what I want. So I 'm hoping to save a few quid this way but then again probably end up spending more. Cheers.

you can pick up a decent 2nd hand twinport for 5 or 600 sheets .....they come up from time to time just keep searching, try volkszone etc, pretty straightforward to fit .....loads of peeps on here can give plenty of advice if you get stuck as for paint the sky`s the limit really but you will get exactly what you pay for......as lads have said at least 3k, if your gonna do it do it once and do it right though imho :mrgreen:

an engine is nowhere near £3k. you can buy a rebuilt 1600TP for £600 from TES (i think they're the cheapest). the fiddly ******* thing is all the anxilliaries- tinware, exhaust, inlet manifold, generator, fanshroud.... etc etc. there's also a lot of stuff that tends to get missed out if you don't know what you're doing, things like thermostats get missed out etc. my recommendation would be to buy a complete second hand engine (my last one was £170, and is absolutely spot on) and if it needs it, also buy a recon long-block. should end up cheaper than a new complete engine, but parts will be most likely genuine VW, and with any luck, all the cooling flaps will be there, the dizzy will be a proper one, etc.

Paint depends on the quality of the finish, as for engines it's a bit different. I paid £699 for a TES lump and it was a total piece of ****! In the summer I paid £145 for an OG 1600 TP which I took out of a scrap 71 that had not run for 7 years, I fitted new piston rings and an Erling seal kit. Done 1000 miles without a hitch :-D
