After my semi disastrous MOT I now can't afford to get the welding done on my front panel to repair the under windscreen rust for a few months.

Is there anything that anyone can recommend to prevent it getting any worse whilst I start saving the pennies?

Post where you are and ask nicely on here! :D

.. failing that i would probably suggest some of the sticky backed flashband used for repairing roof leeks .. b&q sell it ..

.. wont look great though!

Hi,

I used mastic for approx 6 months to control leaks under the screen until I was ready to put it in to be sorted out, that and some duck tape over the top stopped the rain getting in the corners and dripping into my fusebox (it took 3 relays before I noticed that they were each full of water :D) ) - if you want to treat the rust then I've used the rustoleme type stuff which turns it inert, though depends how bad it is as it will likely carry on rusting from within where you can't get to with the treatment

As it`s just a temporary repair I`d just use gaffer tape and try and tuck the edge under the screen rubber for good measure, if you can do it neatly enough, you can spray the gaffer tape so it don`t look too hideous  If you don`t get the gaffer tape under the rubber it will only last a short while as the damp will get behind it.

Get some vactan rust converter available from ebay. Clean back the affected area stick a couple of coats of vactan on and then cover over with some adhesive aluminium repair tape to halt the progress of the rust. By the way, vactan is way superior to the expensive branded products like kurust etc.

Personally I removed my dashboard so I had better access to the affected areas and used chemical metal to close the holes. I then put a very small amount of silicon in from outside, under the window rubber on the area.

Zero leaks after more than 8 months.

Can't wait to one day fix it properly though!

Don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but if the windscreen apature is rusty the bottom of the front panel tends to be going the same way too due to water ingress so remember to budget for that.

2nd that - though I just had the screen replaced, the filler that's holding the bottom of my front end on is starting to come through - luckily it's not that bad so got away with staging the repair, but can attest to the fact that both area's need repairs on mine

I use granvile rust coverter realy good hard film that is weatherproof. Get it from frosts

I've seen no signs of any rust (inside or outside) at the bottom of the panel and I don't appear to have any leaks as yet.

I've still got my fingers crossed that the rust is just bad surface rust, I'm planning for the worst but hoping for the best.

That seems to be my motto when it comes to the bus  (I think I'll add that to my signature)

Thanks for the advice everyone!
