I've taken the switch housing of off the steering column and I can see one of the solder connections to the switch is glowing with the current. No sign of the cable overheating. I can't get the switch out of the housing because the screws are stuck (WD40 diong its thing as we speak). Is this like to be a dirty/ bad solder joint that needs tidying or is it likley I need a new switch?

Have you pinched the cable when undoing the indicator stalk on refit?

I only ask because i had the same thing after my steering wheel was replaced, they removed the stalk so the could use a hydralic puller to get the wheel off- re fitted the stalk but unknowingly caught a cable, only noticed on my way home as i indicated on the roundabout wher a bus went for me for lack of unknowing signals.................................

Only realised later when i got home as the wife was following the van and on inspection there was smoke coming from the indicator housing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

all is fine now though- had to replace the flasher unit as well!

Ben ;)

sounds like it could be a dirty / poor connection, recommend contact cleaner not wd40 ( stuff sticks to wd40 ), or could be damaged pitted contacts, possibly combination of both as one often leads to the other. best bet is to try cleaning first, could try being very careful with cotton bud.
