To say we have been having a bit of an uphill struggle with our new bus is an understatement (please see this thread for more info http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30815" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Although we were getting an oil leak out of one of the rocker covers, I think this is fixed or at worst leaking the odd drip. Therefore, I took the van out for a quick spin tonight just to check things over. While driving, the cab filled up with smoke with a strong burning of oil spell. The smoke was enough to have to wind down the windows to stop me chocking. I stopped the van and got underneath if but could only see a couple of drops of oil on one of the exhausts (the side we where getting the oil leak on) but nothing else. Could this have been the oil that was leaking before burning off and would you expect that much smoke from a bit of oil? I know this is a hard question to answer without being there but just wanted to know if anyone else has ever had an oil leak around the rocker cover, how much smoke / strong smell of oil they have seen.

Many thanks.

These vans certainly test your patience don't they

oil on an exhaust can smoke quiet badly. did you have the heater control open, ie on heat? If so might be a bit of oil inside that needs to burn off. How bad was the oil leak before, did the exhaust get soaked?
If so might explain the smoke.

Heater controls open and then I shut them which stoped the smoke. We had quite a major oil leak before. I am going to give the van a long run at the weekend to see what happens. Could not quite belive the amount of smoke entering the cab

Almost certainly the remains of the oil that leaked onto the heat exchanger. I would remove the concertina bit that joins the exchanger to the body and leave it off for a week while you drive it about to burn it off. Obviously this will only work if you have completely cured the oil leak, just a couple of drops is enough to make loads of smoke.

Yep, I had a small leak from one rocker cover. Parked at clacket lane services (on way to Brighton Breeze) - looked back and the whole back end was in a haze of smoke, with smoke puthering out of the air intakes! A swift check underneath and you could see it burning off the heat exchangers. So it may be a simple as that.

I had this exact problem the other day! This is after new rocker cover gaskets as well - not pleased.
How can I fix the leak?

Try and be 100% sure it`s the rocker gasket as it`s a swine when you can`t cure it because you`re trying to cure the wrong bit. I`ve been fannying around with my rockers and have that pretty clean now but still "OIL DRIPS" so now I`m looking a bit further and now suspect the pushrod tubes as well. It is a battle and process of elimination,, also a lot easier if you can get on a ramp so you can clean up and actually see where it`s leaking. Almost impossible with a filthy engine to find the origins,, go on ,, ask me how I know,

We have traced our oil leak down to the fuel pump, assuming we only have one oil leak!. Could not see any more oil dropping from the rocker covers so we spent time looking over the engine and could see oil seeping out of the pin in the fuel pump when the engine revs are up. Just hope this is the last one.

Being new, our engine was pretty clean but still to a while to trace where it was coming out from. Good luck finding yours.

Put new original style rocker cover / clips / gaskets on yesterday and seems :? a lot better. Have just had my instructions for what "we" are doing today, so won`t be under the bus today. See other thread about summer nagging, and there will be a lot of swearing in Kingswood today.

Probably not the "done thing" gvee, but I ended up putting a thin smear of hylomar blue on the new cork gasket (after cleaning the faces thoroughly) - seemed to do the trick. Makes it harder to get the rocker cover off though, once you'e done it.
