Which one to get? I'm thinking VW heritage or JK.

Yesterday I couldn't get her to start 71 may devon, did the bumping and rocking, even went inside and had a coffee. Yes that has worked before! Eventually got AA out, 12 volts going everywhere, and a small tap to starter motor and off we go. Have I just got to get under the wheel once in a while and tap it or will a new one sort it. AA said it is definitely the starter motor.

All thoughts welcome, this seems to happen one every 200 start ups or so.

Before you go and buy a new starter, nip under the bus whip the wires off and clean the connections and when you put them back on make sure they are tight :mrgreen:

If it's once in a blue moon when it's doing it sounds like a bad/loose connection, and if it cures it, you've saved some money 8)

If it clicks but doesn't spin the starter it's the solenoid. A clean up of the internal contacts will fix it.

it either starts perfectly or does absolutely nothing. Not even a click.

In that case, check your ignition switch.

Next time it happens, see if power goes to the small spade terminal on the starter when the key is turned to start position.

If no its prob your ign switch.

If yes its the solenoid.

I bought mine brand new from GSF - also got money back when I returned the old broken one!
My issue was it wouldnt start when hot due to increased resistance - however it was the OG motor so didnt mind changing it for a shiny new one!

I got mine from Peter at Volksgood s, I know he has retired but he sent me one last week and a very good price. Maybe he stock to clear or honoured our conversation at the back end of last year.

Hi
Are you sorted yet, have you tried running a new wire to the spade on the solenoid and touching it direct to the battery, ( please ensure ignition is off of disconnect the ht lead, not in gear also) this way you can eliminate all of your loom & ignition
likewise is the earth strap from the engine/gearbox also in good condition, often forgotten but just as important for good current flow

interesting thoughts from someone on facebook earlybay or sussex vw about the bush leading into the gearbox and that needing renewing.

Going to get my local garage to have a look early next week.

If you replace the starter you should replace the bush in the bell housing at the same time.

Also maybe be worth fitting a hot start relay, i had issues replaced starter and battery and then eventually fitted a £15 relay which solved all my starting woes!

I would add that it's a bit more than an 'interesting thought' it is an absolute fact about a worn bell-housing bush will create a starter motor failure condition. A few years ago now, when I worked at the B**** starter plant, I instigated an investigation on the VW Air-cooled starter range exchange returns (not warranty) to see why they had failed. Just over 60% were found to working perfectly OK and of which 80% had the witness marks of a worn bell-housing bush. My advice is simple; always check (or better replace) the bell-housing bush for wear before blaming the starter motor!

If you dont want to the bush as it can be a right pain to do, the new Genuine Starters dont actually need a bush as they are self supporting:

If not using the above starter you will have to change the bush as said

So other cheaper option (comes with the bush):

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/311911023DX/starter-motor-8-67-type-2-75-no-exch-req-d/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or if you need just the bush on its own:

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/113301155/bush-gearbox-starter-motor-12v-size/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We also do a tool for pulling the bush (its expensive so normally only bought by garages):

https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/AC0007062/tool-starter-bush-puller-12-volt/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope that helps :D

this is excellent quality in depth discussion well done everyone and I am hoping £2 well spent at vw h will sort it.

cheers
