hello all
just had my steering box refurbed by power steering specilists in charlton
what a top job no more knocking and much less play all for just over £100 posted :D
thought id let you people know that there are some good guys still about
i am not linked to them in any way just wanted to pass on there name if it helps someone else
thanks norm

to be honest not 100% sure  said worm drive was ok
also said some part (for the life of me i cant remember what it was called) had come loose (i think)
took out the filler plug and its full of oil not grease
sorry if this is of no use

A full refurb of these boxes would cost more than £100, I think all they have done is adjust it and refill it with oil. To replace any of the parts they would have to make them which is very expensive.

like i said not sure what they did but it has certainly made a difference
had tried to adjust it myself but this didnt make it any better
it would clonk when the wheel was first turned
i was not trying to say that for the money you could your box rebuilt just that they did a good job and thought i would pass it on in case it would be usefull to sombody else :)

Might break the budget though....

Just had my steering box refurbished at a cost of £145 ,but done in under a week ..costly ,but needed to pass MOT :-(

Glad to hear you got it sorted Norm :)
I will send mine off and update this post when it's done.
These boxes have a lot of small roller bearings inside and I reckon dirty old oil will reduce their performance and could make them feel notchy and clunky

Get that digi camera out and lets see what you been doing.....please!

Hey Norm, I am looking at getting mine does as it has a bit of play.
I see your in Martlesham Heath near Ipswich, thats close to me, any chance of having a feel of ya wheel to see what its like???

Cheers
Luke.

I'm thinking of buying a new LHD late bay steering box and do the modifying that's needed to get them to fit. As said rebuilding an old 1 properly is mega expensive.

Think there is a need ... Just had mine refurbished and put it on and is worse ..so it's off and back to the shop ....gutted ...!!!

The machine shop said they replaced collapsed ball races and had machined inside ,but who knows really unless you get to see it yourself .

Most of the so called 'refurbs' are just adjusted and packed with grease!

Oh dear :( Grease is no good. Gets extruded from where it's needed. A liquid grease however is more searching and sticks.
If I had bearing & output shaft dimentions I might be able to knock up a kit. It's rarely the worm gear at issue as it's designed to 'wear in' before it wears out.
