Well it's nice to know I share the same taste in cars as well as the same taste in vans with a few of you!

The worst best car was my first, at least it got me ready for unreliable air cooled engines and going very slowly

Ah - a charlston. They have got pretty rare even over here and in good condition you wont see much change out of 5000 or more  . I have had 2 2CVs. One was a 1950s one with the tiny engine, the other, one of the last. Terrible vehicles to drive and yet, at the same time, a total hoot [confused smily]

Trikky you have impeccable taste! I had 5, 3 Charlston's (grey, maroon/black and yellow black) and a couple of Dollys. Bought them for around £300, ran them for a bit, then when the chassis rotted through at the front scrapped them! I have been looking at getting one again, but Mrs has put her foot down! The ones that 2CV City are selling are £9995

My fiat coupe is like totes amaze balls. Never driven anything like it, and unless its at the garage its pretty inexpensive.

 I have to say I agree with your Mrs - at £9995 theres none of the fun left.... Just becomes a dumb posing vehicle :(

Chokes me to say - Renaults.

FWD was the original Clio Williams - amazing fun and could really drive it on the throttle - proper lift-off oversteer...

RWD was the Alpine A610 V6 Turbo - just ludicrously fast, looked great, handled like a supercar and you could be a real hooligan if you wanted to. Scared my brother and his girlfriend senseless when I had one on test for a few days... Soz, Bro...

The next best thing to a pick up with a sofa for the front seat is my dull old Volvo V70. It gets covered in **** driving through the lanes, carries rubbish to the tip, wet dogs, 4yr old mess machine (daughter), it's done 171,00 miles and not even had a service in the 4 years I've owned it. Can't beat it for reliability and comfort but it does look a bit middle class and sadly lacking in finesse !

I think the best car I have driven was my Z4M Coupe. Its was well made, aggressive, responsive, comfortable and never gave you 100% confidence in your ability to drive it hard, meaning you always felt like it could bite you if you pushed it that little bit too far.

Miss having it but just couldn't live with it sitting outside on the street at my flat in Edinburgh.

My current daily (now had it for 4 years):
IMG_0125.jpg

Beautiful 4.2 V8 - purrs
Quattro 4 wheel drive - great last winter watching all the fancy rear wheel drive cars slithering around.....
Fantastic Recaro seats (full leather and electric everything inside) plus one of the best sounds systems I have heard in a car!!
IMG_0124.jpg

Plus, used it a few times to tour Europe and designed just for that (would get 30+ MPG plus cruise all day at 90..........)

Ahh

My all time fave i owned for a few years in late 90's early 2k was my Nissan Skyline 2.5 GTS-T TypeM. Beautiful cruising car (at legal motorway speeds) and also astonishing foot down power when required. Yep i was a Gran Turismo fan when it came out and didnt want to follow the scooby crowd

That made way for another smooth car, my old Audi 2.8 Convertible. Also had saloons, coupes and avants in the same model (fancy a vert again)

Also worth a mention was my winter car, but used more in the summer my 1957 Land Rover. Only bought it as the BMW C2.7 alpina vert i had at the time was useless in anything other than dry weather. Resprayed it Ferrari red (helped working at lad rover at the time as a paint sprayer) never did the roof as it was never on when i used it in the summer (nor were the door tops or windscreen)

This was a great motor - 3.5 litre big six from a 5 series had been shoehorned in, was a bit scary in the wet and a bit thirsty though.

But for me a well sorted classic mini takes some beating for shear fun behind the wheel.

The most fun I've had in a totally stock motor was probably my 205 Gti.

I would say the only two cars that I thoroughly enjoy are my present two. The Van obviously, and my daily which is the Mercedes C220 sport. It puts a smile on my face whether I'm cruising around East Anglia between hospitals, or driving it like I stole it. It's comfortable, eats road miles, gets fantastic fuel economy, quick and looks good.

Mine has to be my old Citroën GS Club stationwagon. Flat 4 air cooled you could rev the nuts off. Super smooth suspension. Handled surprisingly well on those 15" 145 section tyres. Incredibly comfortable. Loads of room. And rather pretty to look at even if it was in beige.

There's almost two threads in one here..

a) best car owned

b) best car driven..

My answer to a) would be my current daily, A VW Golf MK5 2.0 GT TDi... it's practical, comfortable, handles superbly, goes like hot snot and returns a min of 50mpg even when you drive it like you stole it!

My answer to b) is more tricky to answer...I've had a lot of hire cars in my line of work, they are usually rubbish but occasionally you get given a gem... at the moment I am tempted to say that the Jaguar XJ8 is the best car I've driven.. but oh! Hang on a moment, whilst typing this I've just remembered another that beats this.. the Aston Martin DB9.. now that was nice, even if the experience lasted only about 20 minutes!

Use to own a Toyota celica convertible 4wd 4ws 2.0ltr black, thing drove like it was on rails derestricted it would run 165 mph, allegedly 0-60 5.5 seconds

Difficult choice really. Nothing particularly fancy, but probably in top spot would have to be my TR6 - mainly because I rebuilt it from the ground up myself. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it:

Then the other half's Mk1 MX5. Not the quickest car, but handles superbly, never any trouble despite having 160,000 on the clock and can be bought for peanuts these days:

Close runners up would be the '97 Impreza Turbo I had from new as a company car. Went like stink and stuck like brown smelly stuff to a blanket. 16 mpg and some scrote keying it end to end down both sides on two occasions took the edge off it though. Audi A4 1.9 TDi Quattro was a great car too - solid, plenty of torque, reasonably quick...

All depends on your definition of 'best' really.

BMW 330i touring sport the car I own now...closely followed by my Golf VR6

Beemer is as fast as , handles brilliantly, and really comfortable on long .

Downsides is the fact it has no cup holders in the front, and the MPG can be heavy if in sport mode. plus being the family car it gets full of family ****....

even in times of recession and fuel prices I'm loathed to part with it...

having said that the bus is a joy to drive....

I drove the New BMW M5 earlier this year around Goodwood and I was absolutely blown away. Easily the best car I've ever driven. Complete and utter weapon in luxury yet drove like a small car.
