Hi All

Has anybody fitted a type 4 motor in to an early bay :?:

I've been given a porsche 914 engine and wondered how easy/hard it would be to fit into my bay :?:

Cheers Paul

Yes, can be done but a bit of work required:

Jake Raby does some tinware templates to seal the engine bay (along with the DTM shroud):

The early bay does not have too much in the way of gearbox support, you may need to add something:

You'll need a modified engine support bar too:

I'm sure folk who know more will be along to fill in some more detail...

Hi

Thanks I've seen some info on the type 4 store about the support bars and dtm fans but it all looks abit expensive.

I wondered if anyone does anything like it in the uk?

Is it a 1·7, 1·8 or 2·0 litre, VW-Porsche 914, VW Type 4 style engine and does it come complete with its Bosch fuel-injection system?

That is a six-cylinder Porsche engine, rather than the VW 17/18/2000 Type 4 style engine, used in the VW-Porsche 914. There were a few VW-Porsche 914-6s, which used the six-cylinder Porsche engine, but they are something of a rarity, especially in the UK.

Hi
Its a 4 cylinder 1700,type 4 engine on twin carbs..
Shame its not a 6 cylinder.

I suspect that those carburettors are a retro-fit, as I would expect the VW-Porsche 914's, VW 1700 Type 4 style, 1·7 litre engine (1679 cm³ displacement, 66 mm stroke x 90 mm bore, with 8·2 : 1 compression ratio => 82 DIN hp @ 4900 rpm & circa 132 N.m @ 2800 rpm; to the best of my recall, off the cuff), to be the same as the VW 411LE, with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection; except for the Porche-specific flywheel, coverplates and exhaust system.

Sounds more like a standard bus engine if its on carbs

If it is a standard 1·7 litre bus engine, then it will have both reduced power & torque compared to the VW411LE engine; peaking relatively high up the rev range (7·3 : 1 compression ratio, 66 DIN hp @ 4800 rpm & peak torque - forget how much, but << 132 N.m! @ 3400 rpm), so not the best choice, for a VW Type 2.
