For those of you interested in buying a new gear stick and possibly like me were stuck between buying a Berg shifter which offers an extra bit of security or the more subtle stockish looking Vintage Speed, here are a few pics of the VS shifter which arrived today direct from Tiawan. It has the same reduction in throw as the Berg (35%), but is certainly more attractive. It cost me £180 (all in). The UK Vintage Speed site I think charges £210 (all in).

I can't testify to how good it works, but another member on this site has one and says its jolly good...

Hi,
I have no idea about the CPS shifter, may be there's another member on this site who has a CPS?

Bargain Mr L.V. I paid £210 last March & still consider it one of the best additions to my Bus,
The CPS is by all accounts excellent as is the Berg just came down to the look I didn't want a Gear stick taking over the look of my cab, I'm a less not more school of thought. ;)

The CSP is about 6/8 inches longer I would say looking at the picture. Its much closer to the steering wheel.

TM,
After discussing the merrits of the VS shifter with you, I decided to buy one. It took 4 days to arrive. I like the look as its understated yet quality. If Berg made a stockish one, I'd have bought it! Regarding the price, I chanced my arm by buying it direct from Tiwan, I have no idea why I was not asked to pay any duty on it. Maybe there's a staff shortage with customs or they were all on strike?

Thanks for all the comments about the CPS and Berg, its all very illuminating stuff.

As my old stock set up had a extender fitted its difficult for me to say but the V.S is about the same height as the handbrake lever as you can see in my photo so I suppose its a little higher than stock not much though.
You could fit an extender to the V.S never seen it done yet but it is possible with standard after market parts it has the same size thread for the knob as stock.

RE: Duty, sometimes you just get away with it, other times you will get an invoice in the post a couple of weeks later. Depending on who it was sent through (UPS invoice you later, DHL, ParcelForce etc you normally have to pay up front). It is normally VAT + 8% handling charge plus about 12% duty. I didn't have to pay anything when my bumpers came in (yay!) and when my TMI interior arrive I thought I had got away with it again...alas two weeks later I got a bill for around £350 - ouch! Fingers crossed that you are lucky!

Hey,
Yes the duty situation seems arbitrary and invites chaos. I bought a full length middle seat from florida (1975 bus) and paid just £16 duty it was flown over beleive it or not! I also paid about the same for a cluster pod... Maybe you can advise me on the TMI stuff you bought - I am going to buy all new interior including stock basket weave seat covers for my bus, is it best to buy these from say Wolksberg West or VW heritage here in the UK? And secondly can I ask who you bought your Vietnam bumpers from? You said they were top draw in terms of quality.

Thanks,

LV

Hi, Im the UK agent for Vintagespeed products.
The Bus shifters are £196.00 + £10.00 for next day courier.
We sell sell them at the shows for £180.00 as a discount, its usually more expensive to buy direct because of the import duty and all the small %s they add on, if you did not pay these then good luck to you.
Glad you like it, they are becoming very popular .
Check out the website.
Cheers.
Dan.

Website says £193, not £196, look after the pennies....

I tried ordering a couple of weeks back but gave up when I couldn't get past the 'fill in your details' page - no obvious reason why it wouldn't proceed

Can we contact you direct and order over the phone?

Hi,
Why not buy direct from the Tiwan manufacturer? This what I did and it cost £180 (this includes postage). Ordered on Sunday - arrived on Thursday at the door - Parcel force, signed for. Job done.

Hi Guys,
Sorry, you are right they have come down from £196 to £193,
You can contact me direct, details on the UK website.
Or try your luck direct, if your lucky like L.v. you might get away from paying the import costs.
Cheers.
Dan.

Interesting thread, looking to change my EMPI shifter to a Vintage Speed (like the simple stock look and been recommended) or a CSP - also recommended. Having seen the pics of the vintage it looks kinda short, does anyone use either of these with Saab seats? I reckon they'll be too low - any thoughts ...

Cheers - be good to know before I blow close to £200 :!:

Martin

I have stock seats I'm tall just under 6'3'' 1.90meters but have shortish arms so my Tailor tells me ;) but I am no means a T.Rex & I often change gear half way down the stem of the gear stick in my casual way  My shifter is just under the height of the handbrake handle, to me this suits me to perfection. The v.s. is at least the same height as the Empi/Hurst style shifter. If i wanted to go higher I would of gone for the Berg as I'm not keen on the leather bag look on the C.S.P base looks like a Scat.
Hope this helps you.

Cheers for that - still worried that the VS will be too low, I sit really high with the Saab seats. Will look at Berg as well as CSP.

Martin
