WANTED: Ignition housing for 68!!!! bay - FOUND ONE CHEERS

Alright, me again.

I've not exhausted all avenues here yet but as most parts get sent back to the UK I wonder if one of you Squirrel Nutkins horders has an ignition housing for me. It's for my 69 bay - but probably has a 68 steering column housing. I don't need the lock barrel even, just the housing thing. I've got the cover plate/steering column housing all painted ready for it (it has the 'lip' at the dash end).

do you mean the bit the ignition switch is mounted in?

ok, the bit I want is what the actual lock, or tumbler, slides into. It's the outer case, or jacket if you will. Contains grub screws etc and can be a dickens to remove if you don't know how too. They look much the same as each other at a casual glance but what seems to differentiate them is the thing that the assembly bolts onto, the one for 69 - correct me someone if I'm wrong - has a lip on it.

A photographic example I found on the internet;

An experiment was conducted to determine the differences between this housing and later ones. The housing was upturned to reveal it's underside

A measuring device was placed at the centres of each bolt hole that the lock assembly fits too. The reading was exactly 60mm - this has been proved to be narrower than later models.

Any lock assembly that would fit this dimension has a good chance of being the one I'm after. Is yours like this Rich?

the one in the pic is a 68 only i belive, they had the hump on the back. 69s had a flat "top"
ive got a spare one for a 69, ill post a pic up in a mo

Thanks for taking the trouble - well the one I've photographed and measured is the one out of my van so, maybe it's a 68 when it comes to ignition housings, it has the lip. Probably is being Australia, using bits up year by year. I've read talk of them using 3 types between 68-70.

But it is the lock housing i'm after, the thing that the barrel/tumbler goes into and that the switch goes on. Got the switch, got a lock now, well a couple, but not the right housing.

Thanks for that Araon - yeah it's the queer looking lump on the left. Not the key wiggley bit. Mine needs to bolt to the column housing (that black thing previously featured above) and the bolts are 60mm apart. Also, the steering lock that sticks in and out on the end - like a man's cock -fits snuggly into a perfectly machined hole - like a bird's fanny - on the column housing. Not like the later ones which 'spoon' into a cresent curve (male) and matching depression (female) on the housing.

For that you Araon can watch this as a treat.

I think Aaron's got the post '70 one in the pic - see there is a convex cresent where the steering lock will poke out when engaged - or turned on - the earlier one-year-only is round to fit in a round hole in the column housing (see my pic, it's got a round hole for it to be offered into - not spooning style like Aaron's.

This whole affair could do a persons head in.

Don't want to appear to be a "smart arse" but the vernier caliper in the photo is not reading 60mm - it is reading just under 62mm (probably 61.8 but picture cuts off after the "7" on the top sliding scale so can't tell exactly). The reading is not taken against the edge of the sliding scale (which is against 60) but from the position of the "0" and whichever graduation on the slide lines up "exactly" with a graduation on the stationary part (hard to explain so I won't go on!) :?

It is not a big difference but as you have gone to so much trouble with your photos I thought I would let you know. You would certainly not get the screws in if the holes were misaligned by 2mm.

My van (68) came with the ignition barrel missing but the rest of the column and housing is complete.

I sourced a complete 68 steering column with lock & key.

However I still haven't fitted it. Once it's on my van, the rest of the bits that came on my van will be available, but I'm not sure when I'll get it fitted. It's not a job I've done before and from what I've heard it's pretty tricky.

I'll take some pics tomorrow so you can see what I've got.

I'm up there today, I will supervise an audit of the procudure and check calibration records of the instrument - but to be honest I think the art director handled all the media releases and any images were just for demonstration only, I'll take it up with the production manager as to be honest it's embarressing if there's a mistake. If you weren't so far away i'd offer you to take this whole thing over - do you freelance?
