What am I missing?

So I was building a panel for my rear hatch...
And it got me thinking that it should have a way to open the hatch from inside...
So I made this little handle from some scrap I had laying around...
Was there some sort of handle there originally that I am missing ?

From memory, most of the panels and hence some of the conversions had just a hole to access the escape lever inside the tailgate. Some of the other conversions had various bohemian adaptations very similar to yours above :mrgreen:

I think I remember a guide on using a ford KA handle to open it- to the point where I bought one- but can't for the life of me find it now. Might have a look tonight, I'm fiddling with the tailgate anyway.

I've got a rear hatch mechanism with internal handle on my bus.
It's difficult to use with the bed cushion in place though....
