What jobs do we do?

Staff Nurse.....Happily married with two kids who have now left home, but still costing us money. Before ? Waved my hands about for a living working and signing with the Deaf Community, Played in a band (supported the Specials, Dexy's, Madness, etc....such good times), Took up Black and White photography and Tried to sell.....but didn't, Took up Ceramics (Individually made Celtic inspired mysical stuff) and Tried to sell.....which Did........ and part time useless (and bruised...damn starter D-Bolt) mechanic because I can just about afford the EB parts but not pay the mechanic to fit them. Nurse's wages you see.

I have had a few jobs, worked on the Greenpeace veseel Solo (proper hippy) then became a Youth Worker/ Social Worker eventually worked at 'The Priory' specialising in Addictions and Abuse survivors. Mother of 3 sons and a granny ...that does count as a job

Got bored with all that so became an addict (to my bus) and am now Head Gardener of my own little company :lol:

We definately needed some female input and YES, Mother of 3 is THE hardest job

I'm restoring it at the mo so not for long, but its a horrible tractor green paint hung on in curtains lol it was a quick repair after the fire :shock:

I didn't go mad and paint rainbows all over her but i did tipex a ban the bomb sign on the front wheel cover back in the 80's :mrgreen:

This is when she last looked half decent......

Seriuously, I have just completed my ATA, three days of sheer murder to achieve. I saw some good beaters fold up under the pressure. Even the instructors said it is way, way over the top. :shock:
We are going PAS125 right now and when its up and running fully its going to be a nightmare. I don't think our lot quite understand the full implications of it. Its a volume workshop run on bonus, get em in and get em out, things are going to slow down quite a bit. The only good thing is it gives a bit of power back to the workshop staff
No, 30 years of it from small shops, restoration firms and the big franchise groups has taken its toll, next stop is out for me.
Now if I had my own workshop and a yard full of bays that might just keep an old dog going

:lol: I was young and enthuastic. 18 and working on vws all day it was mint.
I'm not far off 22 young still, but feeling about 92 and doing modern stuff. Mainly de-fleet and trade work (its kinda scary how since february I've watched the second hand traders get more and more tight about what work gets done)
I do miss the resto work, I think its because we were building someones pride and joy rather than bashing out someones daily asap.
From what I understand when I get my LV3 this time next year I'll be PAS125 compliant for 3 years? After that three years hopefully I'll have saved enough cash to go travelling or gone back to resto work.
I remember my first day at college the tutor said "There's some things you need to know, 1, you'll never be rich, 2, you'll die young, but 3, you'll never be out of work"
Well he was wrong on number 3 in the case of a lot of lads, I'm kinda hoping he was wrong about number 2. Although owning VWs and having a hankering for a yank motor I guess he's got number 1 right.

At least that's what I tell people, as soon as you mention electronics engineer you end up with all sorts of requests to repair stuff.
As an engineer I've done all sorts, night vision conversion for military aircraft, radio Navigational beacons for airports, remote meter reading for gas electric and water meters, other stuff too dull to remember, and now bespoke test systems for production of PCB drilling spindles. All rather dull to be honest, we spent a while in hotel management which was fun but didn't pay enough and the hours didn't suit the wife. Still doing electronics now but it's a dead industry in the UK just can't think of anything else to do that will pay the bills.

From working in a chinese takeaway, to bricklayers labourer, to working in a bank, i trained for six years as a quantity surveyor, worked in a pub at the same time, and am now md of a small main contractor in south london and north east surrey. times are tough but we're getting through them ok thankfully

cobalt green construction, it has only taken us 17 years to start getting our website designed, will hopefully be available soon. we haven't done anything for/with costain, too big for us. we build/extend/refurbish posh houses in wimbledon and the a3 corridor for clients and work for a couple of schools at the moment. we work for nice people generally but have had our moments/knock backs like others.

Merchant Seaman................

Been doing it for 24 years now so the novalty has well worn off. Enjoyed the world wide travel/partying when i was younger and done some really different and dangerous (ish) things which i am glad i had a chance to experiance.
Worked on afew different types of ships (Containers, Royal Fleet Auxiliry, Aggregrates Dredgers, Cable layers, Ferries and Cruise Ships). Although im a civilian i had the chance to be involved with the First Gulf War in a very front line position and also spent 6 months in Croatia at the hight of the troubles out there.

Im now working for Trinity House which although rated as one of the best jobs under the UK flag is just like any other job to be honest, but with slightly more ********.
Jumping from boats onto Lighthouses and Navigation Bouys is exciting for the first few months but then like anything else becomes just a means to an end.

I work 6 months a year which is the best thing about it for me now (but i do have to spend all that time away.................)

Same for me. Do you find that everything you ever plan to do , every cocert ticket you ever buy or trip you plan ends up coinciding with you having to go away and miss it :evil: :evil: Or do you work regular turnrounds?
