I have a Panel Van , same colour as yours i think ?? , not sure what its for , I am just gonna ply over it in mine :D

i cant say i notest that groove in my panel before i paneled over it all with ply, il hav another look when i come to redo mine as its just abit of a crap fit. I would guess its to retain the wood paneling

Looks to be the retain / return for the upper panels for the windowed variety! but as panels don't have the window returns fitted guess they are just there! :)

My guess would be the panelling would of been done in two halves. Top and bottom and that the protruding strip was there to help the wood take weight on it? :?:

Holding a panel was my first thought but look at this image:

That's the other side of the van of course and there's a nice rectangular space where a wooden panel might go and usefully sit in that groove... but what about the back corner?

The groove goes right around that corner (as in the earlier photo) but we don't need a panel there (because we've got a metal panel) and indeed it would be awkward / messy to have one there.

Also, if a panel were to sit in the groove there's nothing to help fix it, or make a neat job, at the top or sides.

nicks reply was correct its where the inner window frame seat belt mountings panel fits on a microbus
