I have been on ebay :msn4: looking for parts for my dormobile project (finished at end of month i hope) pics to follow when i work out photobucket. the parts and full campers on there are priced at stupid money and most arent even selling. Is this greed or is the bottom falling out of an overpriced market. Anyway my point is well i dont know what my point is other than people need to wake up and smell the coffee. I have a price in my head of what i will pay as i am sure do many others so why are idiots out there inflating prices to the point where the item doesnt sell. RANT OVER  :D

It's silly season. Wait for the cooler months prices will realign again. However I feel the days of a 200 quid bus are long gone.

Supply and demand. The prices will either get paid or be reduced till they do. In any market there are chancers, and also those that sell cheap .... its down to buyers to do theyre research.
No van is cheap these days, people owe it to themselves to research any big purchase. :)

Of course you are right. I paid slightly over the odds for my Dormobile and have now had a year of buying, cutting, welding, rubbing and kicking the crap out of it. I dont want to keep things original but am looking for parts not just on ebay but all over. This forum has been brilliant for leads by the way. As you say supply and demand but the amount of chancers out there is staggering.

The amount of chancers seems to be fairly closely matched to the number of fools!
I keep seeing people that have paid 6-7-8k for a van that shouldnt even have an MOT and in some cases is actually dangerous to drive!! But as long as people insist on buying vans purely because they are A) Shiny B) A nice colour C) It seemed ok. And not even test driving them or looking under them!!, then chancers will carry on selling them!

True, i bought a van which was advertised as needing complete renovation, i looked at it, priced up parts and talked to my local bodyshop as i knew the majority of the bodywork was beyond me. I paid slightly over what i wanted because it was close to my house so could be dragged home easily. I should have bought a van completely renovated but didnt, as i couldnt afford the full outlay in one go and i wanted a van that was me and not someone else.

I am hoovering up parts like they are going out of fashion and am always in for a bargain (i enjoy the hunt) If it wasnt for the fact i have always wanted one of these but can only now afford to do up and run one i would have lost heart and gone back to mini's. But hey ho onward we go. It better live up to my dream that has being kicking around my had for over 20 years and it better not catch fire on first outing  .

a good solid van is quite expensive these days a couple of 7/8 years ago a crew cab van was very difficult to sell beyond a selected bunch of buyers now people are snapping them up to some the vw van is a way of life and to others a fashion statement and the amount of people who have said :i had one of those vans-wish i still had it i would get a few quid for it now.: and if you manage to find any on a drive with there butts falling out but ideal for parts you get oh i love this van {yeah right thats why its dissintigrating on youre drive} and there worth a lot of money when there done but you can have it for .....stupid price.... if you sold every last servicable piece at a realistic price and scrapped the rest you wouldnt get half the price they want then along comes mr i want one but know nowt he,s bought it took it home realised its gonna cost him more than he can afford just to get it up to m,o,t standard so it goes onto ebay as a...i got this as a project but now i dont have the time and i need to get the stupid price i payed for it ...someone who knows there vw,s looks at it and goes :50: but mr and mrs want one but no nowt buy the dam thing :party0053: or it slowly drops in price over time or rusts itself away untill its gone ..a fool and his money ...-but these days they seem to be parting with larger amounts of it- if its got vw on it i have had people ask me too find them a van i tend to point them at some of the reputable sales folk armed with good advice on what to look for and they go off and buy ..a peach..from fleabay..that turns out to be a lemon...in fact some times 2 lemons fussed together.. WHY...

I`ve been looking for a late bay scrapper for quite a while now, they seem to be a few hundred and then all of a sudden the bidding goes potty and you`re talking two grand for a pile of rust and sometimes more  I`m after a late bay devon roof as it`s the one I like the look of, don`t like the early devon or the one on my bus now, looks like a beached turtle on my roof :? Plus it clogs up the gutters which is why the roof / gutters rusted out. I`d also like the 2L cog swapper as well, then part the rest (rust) for parts :msn4:

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, it seemed such a simple plan,,

iam breaking a late devon :msn4:

I must admit i was having a quick look on ebay at campers and parts just for the hell the other and noticed the same thing, massively overpriced busses and parts, i mean £20,000 for a latebay is just way way out. Although i do understand that if people are willing to pay then prices will go up.

On another point that i was talking to my mate about is the people that have no idea about the busses or understand the scene and just see all the media hipe and such then get a pile of shit from somewhere ask the earth for it and if on the occasion that you ask questions about it, you get the answers like 'these are rare as anything, there worth a fortune when done, jamie olivers got one of these, you can get all the parts to completely rebiuld these now and if anything goes wrong with the engine you can have it out in 5 mins

If they are as rare as these people are saying then why are the tons of these on ebay, and yes i do think there is some money to be made on these if thats your aim but surely you need to buy at the right price which brings you back to the people who are selling shit at high prices you just can't. What they also fail to see that while you can get most parts for these its an absolute mine field of quality and to get really good or rare stuff takes years and years of hunting. If anyone does know of any person that can one of thses engines out in 5 mins i would happily do my next big shop in the buff  and please know your models Jamie Oliver has a split or had one as i believe it is now sold.

Rant over hope this makes sense :?

It is a bit like 'Wheeler Dealers' on the box :msn4: , when he adds up what it's cost he only prices the parts - never costs out the manhours, if he did it would say what we all know, it cost more than it's actually worth......

 its nice to know im not the only one who seems to get numptys with stupid questions and as for the {all haill} :worship: mr j.oliver has one that really grips my s*%*t ..loads of celebraties have em so what if i had mr j,s money i would have about half a dozen vans that would keep me busy then i wouldnt have to go round making vegatable nut cutlett soup getting :sick0006: and getting on peoples nervs :stonehim: .....

Its not just normal punters on ebay, look at the cost specialist vw modifiers sell a slammed bus for, built to your spec etc, bay/split etc. Its cost for the high spec buses, even more so if its bought, not built. But you pay for a quality build, and quality parts, so you get what you pay for. Plus parts etc are increasing in price, due to cost rising on new parts, and old parts due to demand and supply. But i have to agree, plenty of chancers out there, so buyer beware

ok then to aviod being a numpty my bus is up for sale for 250 quid!!!! with a full tank of gas and free aa cover and a bag of spares( the bits that fell off)

to be serious though we payed top dollar for our bus a year ago, but having said that apart from engine issues which the bus has everything we need and has given us so much pleasure that its money well spent , however its a solid bus and we treat him like a member of the family.

having said that i agree there are a lot of people buying the two tone shiny dream bus!! and its just had a flashover with a rattle can and thats sad to see. so it all about buyer beware and do your research, if its too good to be true it is.

ps bus isnt really for sale.

we had him up on here when he was doing our head in and a few peeps said 17000 was too cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( thats not what we payed for him before you all think i won the lotto) :D

john the horse , mrs bex horse and lazer horse( dog) , naughty billy horse( bus) :)

As i said and it seems to be bourne out here, you look at something and you have done your homework and know what you want to pay. Then some twat puts the price so high it scares people off. With purchase price and the amount i have chucked at this i know i will loose a lot of money if i sell, but as i said half way down this thread I have stamped my own personality on this peice of rust and cant wait to cut around Cornwall this Aug. :D :D

The general and i went on honeymoon down in St Ives 23 years ago and want to do the things we did then (eat cornish pasties and drink beer until i can do it no more) :D Even knowing i was buyiing a resto didnt prepare me for the amount of work that has had to be done and the amount of bits that needed buying. All that said, this last year has been fun, although a bodyshop is doing the big stuff i have been doing the smaller grinding sanding and spanking. The worst thing is my son has driven it my wife has had it started and i cante even turn the bloody key in the lock. :(

ill add another glad its not just me to the list, i must admit i paid more than i should for a bus that shouldnt have had an mot, but did... all the usual... but iv learned a lot, the hard way, but some of the prices now are stupid,
A friend has just insured his 73 westy for 17k, to anyone who knows their vans, he would be lucky to get half if he sold it, but he knows that, its insured to try and get what hes spent, and that bit i can understand. if you can do that, then go for it. the whole everyone wanting a shiny bus bit is whats making it so bad, shiny obviously always means rock solid...

some people are probably selling genuinely top notch busses, but the polished turds are ruining their chances, the scene and peoples dreams!!!

This site should register as a charity to help all those pour souls affected by the dreaded common german tin worm, and its purveyors.
at least if its shiny on here, chances are its solid too.

As long as folks are willing to pay folks are willing to ask........

to be honest the types of busses most of us are going to buy arent going to be in the silly money territory since we tend to enjoy the original patina if not to ride in then to buy, everythings on show, the battle scars and its lifes story......we spray or commission a respay to suit our needs or keep the patina.......

A colleague of mine is searching for 3 westies for his hire bussnes but hes leaning to some right dodgy shiney busses, granted if your leasing them out then shiney tends to present the image but I've seen some of the pics of the stuff hes looking at and they may have had recent blow overs and all shiney but the panels are as right as my dogs back legs, hes not heeding my warnings I fear and I've steered him towards some honest steel but the romantism of the whole affair seems to be turning his head and severely distracting his attentions of the long term......

i agree with all the above and yes some of us do pay over the odds i have done myself before now i cant speak for everyone but the good folk of vw who some times pay over for a van and realise its a can of worms will decide restore it or scrap it and where would we be if we scrapped them all and it is nice to see another van rescued from the scrap heap and bought back to life but its the folks who knock em up and knock em out knowing its a galloping bog monster it puts a tarnish on the scene unfortunatly you can only advise potential purchasers and i get annoyed when they turn up with there new van smiling like a cheshire cat and you know theyve been spanked if you say yeah thats a good van they slate you for not telling them the truth if you tell them the truth they think youre jealous so i end up thinking why ask me for advice if youre not going to listen to a word i say :stonehim: ...

i have been sourcing parts from many companies over the past year. To be fair all companies i have dealt with have been superb, prices have been fair and advice has been brilliant.
