i went over to the dark side and got a T4/T5 not gonna get rid of the old girl but we fancy going north and when i say north i mean Norway/Sweden and i don't think the old girl would be practical for a couple of weeks hard driving plus the hills etc. would probably ditch my daily and use the T4/5 on that basis which is the better all round engine ie. economy etc anyone know.

Do you really care that much what people think of you that it would influence your choice of transport?!

I bought a 1.9TD T4 on an '02 plate when I sadly sold my '71 bay.....
It was a great daily driver and I loved it!
It's not a bay, will never feel like driving a bay does (cool factor)
Will never be as adventurous
But it's a great second camper!
In the ideal world I'd have both but being broke is quite the annoyance

I drove my bus to the Outer Hebridies this summer, 5-up & a dog, and slept in it. Having only fitted the engine that day after a failure. So I had zero shakedown or preparation. We did 1500miles and it was awesome.

I do actually have a T5 but would never dream of using it over the Bay for a road trip holiday.

There is no reason your bus wouldn't make it either, go on do it 8)

I've had a few t4's- only got rid as I have a work van and needed a family car. They're amazing. Loads of room, decent economy, easy to fix and a decent online following so lots of discussion and knowledge. My 1.9td ran on used oil that I used to filter from the cafe I worked at- did a trip to France with a full tank and 100L in drums in the back with 3 mates and our bikes and had an absolutely mint trip for about £100 all in.

I'd have another in a heartbeat if they weren't so expensive!

Cheers guys, firstly could'nt give a rats ass what people think but somehow feels dirty almost two timing the old girl to even think it, but with 1500 miles minimum one way and maybe only a couple of weeks to play with you can pack the miles away with that extra ummf.

as the old girl is still off the road we went to europe in the focus this summer took out the back seats completely bought a tent and off we went it did kind of prove that 2500+ miles in a couple of weeks is better/different/easier with a newer motor,

would never get rid of the bay would still use for long weekends and holidays in this country.

maybe a diesel VW van will drop in price now....

This!

There's no reason (with a few mods) a bay can't sit at the motorway speed limit and be reliable.

I took mine to Spain and back and it behaved flawlessly, even over the mountain passes over the Pyrenees in 30+ degree heat.

The more you use it, the more reliable it'll be ;)

The gearbox happened after that trip - on that trip I was sitting at 55mph on motorways :)

If your bus is running ok and you've had a good few runs in it there's no reason it wouldn't be ok to use abroad. I think it's more of a confidence thing really, that a 40 odd year old vehicle will actually do it, but there are plenty of examples (some above) of buses actually doing long journeys in the UK and on the continent. (check out Supertramp's thread)

If you start factoring in economy, well a 25mpg bus will not stack up against a T4/5, (35mpg ish) although there's the outlay for the other camper to consider against that. You could also think about LPG conversion which would probably give you a return of around 40mpg. (petrol equivalent) :)

If my maths are right a 2000 mile trip at 25 mpg would cost £400
(assuming petrol at £5 a gallon)

At 35 mpg its £286 so saving £114. Not a massive amount for an annual holiday maybe?
