Hi,

First post so apologies if i've started in the wrong place.

Just bought my first bay, a 72 Dormobile, and it has a new-ish 1679cc engine. I'm stocking up on spares and bits and bobs, but not sure whether the 1679 is classed as the 1600 or 1700?

From my very  limited lnowledge on these things, it would be the 1700, but i would appreciate if some one could confirm.

Thanks

J

I think this depends on if you have a type 4 engine or type 1 engine with bigger barrels/pistons.

Can you post a pic?

A5h,

Thanks for the reply, we keep the van in locked storage,so will need to take a pic next time we take it out. Next weekend hopefully.

Is it a uk van (RHD) or an import (LHD)?

its an RHD.

I've just been going through the pile of receipts we got with it and it looks like the engine is actually a 1585. :?

The 1679 came form the V5, so that may be wrong. Is there anyway that i can tell for sure by looking at the engine?

Quick at a glance guide...

If your engine looks like this (fan on the end), it's a T4 (1700)

If your engine looks like this (fan on top), it's a T1 (1600)

As has been said, 1679 as a description could be either (1600 T1 with a big bore kit or a stock 1700 T4)

No probs ;)

Next trick is to know if you have a singleport or a twinport. Given the year of your bus, it should be twinport but stuff gets swapped about over the years. Easiest ways to tell:

Twinport has rubber boots with jubilee clips on the manifold (look to the left of the orange dizzy cap in this pic):

Singleport has a onepiece manifold (no boot):

Geeze,

Finally got some pictures,

SO it looks like a twin port.. right?

anything else worth knowing?

Also i've noticed some oil spotting coming out of the bottom spout of the air filter / oil bath, is this normal???

Thanks

James

Bottom spout should have a tube on it that connects to the warm air intake under the rear tinware.

If theres oil coming out (just a drip or two) it may just be the air filter was over filled or tipped over a bit too far when it was last removed (its an oil bath filter). If your engine is not using a lot of oil or chuffing oil mist from the breather then its nothing to worry about.

Tricky,

I'm keeping an eye on the oil, so far we've done devon and back (from west mids) and a couple of weekend trips, and the oil has gone down from the full mark to just below half way between the two marks. As It's my first van I have no idea whether this is excessive. There have been a couple of spots on the garage floor when left standing for the week, but nothing frightening.

No obvious signs of any leaks so I'll just keep an eye on it.

What is the consensus for when's best to replenish the oil? I've read various opinions.

Thanks

James

Ok so its using a bit of oil but not a huge amount.

A spot on engine like yours will not normally need topping up with oil between oil changes (they are quite frequent compared to moderns). That said, long runs on the motorway will tend to use a bit more oil so I dont think you have anything to worry about.

As for what oil - any reasonable brand 15/40 or 20/50 will be fine. In your case I would tend to go for the slightly thicker 20/50 option. Ignore the numptys who carp on about using straight sae 30 "because its what VW recommend". VW changed their recommendations back in the 70's as oil technology improved. Straight 30 was originally recommended because its the only stuff that was available. It gets much thinner when hot than a multigrade and will therefore burn more, leak more and generate a lower oil pressure.

If your engine currently has old oil or sae 30 in it then just changing to 20/50 will reduce your consumption.

THanks for the advice.

The van will be stood for a week or two now so I'll see how much drips out of it before we next go away.

I don't suppose I can interest you in a brand new 5 litre bottle of morris 30, can i???
