I love the look of all VW vans, but I particularly like vans which are as close to original as possible, at the standard ride height and possibly with the spare wheel bolted to the front panel. I get the definite impression I am in a minority. Basically, the closer they look to the way they did in the1960's/70's the better. Am I weird?! Discuss!

Not at all! Totally stock is good, totally stock slammed is good, totally custom is good, totally rust and prime is good, as long as it's a low light

Yep I'm with you too, Air Cooled Rookie.
I love 100% stock. 8)

Whilst stock is my preferance, I do enjoy looking at all the modded buses on the forums and at shows etc. It always fascinates me as to just what can be done to a bus, and the work that people put in to make them that way. :D

your not weird, im of the same train of thought, if i bought a good enough stock bus it would definitely stay that way, the same with beetles. Im making subtle mods (lowering mildy) to my 71' with a totally stock interior.

I like vans low but each to their own in my book i had 3 of my friends beg me not to lower my van but its my van so it got lowered and i love the lowered look!

They do look like they were built for off roading at stock height though?

you are a pureist mate.everyone would love to find an original stock untouched van as they are the rearest in my opinion

im liking both stock and not, when i got my bus it had been robed of all the stock parts so i dident go for stock but id love a stock micro bus, would defo not have the wheel on the front tho,as always each to there own, could you imagine driving 100 miles to a show to look round thousands of stock buses,i think what makes them special is the rareraty

I do love my og stock height bus, ive spent a lot of time and effort turning it back from a surf bus to an original looking deluxe ( not quite there yet)
Having said that I do love some of the slammed busses on here, Egotrippin, Grazy, gadgetboy etc etc.
Not only can you radically alter a busses appearance by lowering but you can easily reverse the process, talk about versatile.

Same here mate - love the stock! I think custom has its place otherwise everything stock would be a tad tedious. I also feel that as trends pastel colours/graphics/resto's and the con that is 'rat look' all come and go but a stock mint bus or bug is what will always have appeal and what we always come back too.
For me personally, I've always been a fan of un mutilated VW's ( not necassarily trailer queens either)

the con that is 'rat look'

A bit harsh....

depends on what you view as rat look, a good aged bus sealed and suspended in animation can look 8) Ego are your ears burning?

however too many folks are trying to get the rat look by mutilating a perfectly good bus/bug now thats a crime :x

ratlook and preserving patina can be seriously cool, but one thing i can understand is faked patina, like painting on rust! why :?

............a bus should look as the owner wishes it to...low/high....rusty or shiny...but they should all make you smile

I worry about the people (Freud had a name for them...2nd stage I think  ) who talk about original.......mine hasn't been original since it left the factory and was shipped to Danbury; who cut a bloody big hole in the roof stuck a lump of fibre glass over the hole, put a bed in the back and curtains round the windows......the day it was registered it was a modified bus and has been ever since.....

.....did VW ever put the spare wheel on the front??? Or is that a mod

...aren't most people who have a bus are wierd :?

i can think of nothing better than a bone stock delux micro bus in og paint (like scott wilsons) they look awsome sadly with my bus so many original features (bulkheads, interior, roof, and sooo many holes etc etc) had been changed or bodged over the years that simply getting it to be a whole bus again would be enough. my beam was so rotten i had no option but to replace it and it seemed a shame not to get a lowered one.as for the rest of the bus i'll keep as much as i can.

OK OK sounded a bit harsh  no offence meant, you put it a bit better - a genuine 40 year old work weary Volksie has a certain coolness but I'm with you on the deliberate ageing thing.

of course everyone who owns a old VW is a brother anyway, we're just taking minor preferences & opinions amongst our selves - Love to all!!! :D
p.s. SBN 664J that orig Dormobile is a dream to me - that is the pinicle of desirability to me!!!!

:D Yes I suppose 'original' can be defined differently.
I regard my van as 'stock' or 'original', as (apart from a few 'laughter lines' and 'battle scars') it is as it would have left the showroom at the local VW dealership 36 years ago. :D

as I'm 28 I've never seen a factory fresh type 2 lowlight. I saw the brazil ones but they are different to westfalia designs. As such its hard to lust after something that when I was growing up was already old, yet not old enough to be classic. Thats why mine is a custom job but hopefully in the spirit of the originals. I love a totally original camper, and yes maybe prefer it, but would never spend the money unless it was a split screen (sorry). The reason is, I think originals don't do anything more, in fact much less than custom campers, but are loads more money. I also like the fact that its mine and nobody has one like it. A late split or bay would make a good original for me because both have great engines & features for the shape of the van. I doff my hat to people who spend time & money doing an early bay cos in my mind its like charity cos it won't return you the cash u spend, and it hasn't got the features of a late bay.

Maybe a little controversial given the forum.

I prefer the early bay look to the late bay look obviously.
