Im hoping to let simon see my bus at Volksworld where he can see the play for himself.

I'll also get him to look at mine, my bus will be at the VOWO show, be good to compare. What day are you there??

When i spoke to Simon last week he was expecting to be there on the Sunday.

Sorted my knocking, lower shock bolt on the drivers side needed tightening. All sorted now. Put about 40-50 miles on the bus on Saturday, the front end ride is lovely, really handles the bumps and rough roads well, feels great on corners too. Just need to get the steering slop sorted out.

the end plates are supposed to arrive pre-assembled and geometry set so shouldn't have been loose really

aside from the steering slop does your steering wheel self centre as it should? My wheels have been laser aligned but the wheel will just stay where I put it. I think I'm going to have to adjust the castor angle on mine

It wasn't loose but it wasn't tight enough because I had taken this bolt out the previous weekend to torque the end plate bolts up, the shock was preventing me from getting my toque wrench in there and had to be moved out of the way.
I think it must self centre, I haven't noticed it doesn't.

I've changed my bevel box out now

I couldn't find a bevel box narrow enough to bolt in with an adaptor plate and still align with the column which is probably why red9 designed their own box. I decided to try and mount an adaptor plate from the opposite side of the chassis. Here's a few pics.

this is the bevel box, an adaptor plate and the link to the steering column. The link is a borgeson 3/4-48 to 3/4 smooth bore coupler. Conveniently the same diameter as the red 9 so I chopped it off and welded into the coupler.

to fit in the space the box had to sit right up against the chassis rail so I did have to make some mods to chassis. There was a lip at the bottom of the rail which I had to grind of flush. Also the two rear bolts would interfere with the box. This could have been a prob but I found the steel was thick enough though to countersink and use csk bolts.

This is the adaptor plate bolted to the back of the chassis. The bits of angle are stiffener plates to stop it flexing. The top bolt isn't nyloc as it would interfere with the brake pedal so it's a normal nut plus Loctite. There's spacers behind this plate.

Couple of pics of the box bolted in place. I made the adaptor plate so it doubled up as a bash plate although the box does sit slightly higher than the red9 I think. I could have got it another 20mm or so higher if I did again. The u joint is a borgeson 3/4-48 to 3/4-DD.

the link to steering rack is a 11/16-40 u joint.

There's no play at all now. I've been out for a short drive and it feels great. I'm going to isle of wight in a couple of weeks so that should test it out good.

The box is the one from the creative engineering str rack conversion kit. It's as quality unit

Thats a lovely job and a quality looking bevel box. I had no idea these things were available.
If it's from the creative kit do they make a bracket for this to bolt to a bay?
its bad you had to go this route but glad to see a good solution.

yea I got from creative, they agreed to sort me out with just the bevel box from their kit.

I searched high and low through different box options but I found it hard to find them with a suitable size or angle.

they don't do a bracket though as their kit is completely different. I just made the bracket up to get it to fit, it's pretty simple to make though.

only down side is I can't get my bumper off without removing the box. I think this problem could be designed out though

That looks great , Im sure you or creative could make a few quid manufacturing these or maybe even Red9 could come up with something like this?

You are right it does except it looks like they have chopped part of the mounting bracket off, out of interest where did you find that one?

Hours and Hours on Google. I'm going to ring them tomorrow to get some pricing. If it looks like a suitable solution I'll post up more details.

Lol been there before, not sure whether you can buy single units from them or not

cheers, I was just sharing the idea if it helps others out, I have no plan to reproduce. It pretty simples though, i'm sure plenty of aircooled specialists would be willing to take it on if people didn't want to do themselves. Just need a decent welder.

If red9 come up with a they should free issue to everyone that's already brought the kit anyway.

Graham's right, I've already spoke to the manufacturer and the cost is high for one offs.

Have you spoken to creative? if you want the same box they indicated to me that they would be willing to sell more units and I was happy with the price.

I managed to take her out for a spin down the motorway yesterday, very pleased with it so far.

I met simon at Volksworld yesterday and as soon as he felt the play in my steering he acknowledged it wasn't right. He said he has hold of a Pailton (i think) box now and is working on a replacement but it will take a few months. He going to look at the bevel box i gave him back and send me another to keep me going in the mean time.
He was nice as pie so I'm happy to be patient and hope he gets the right solution.
