Well as some of you may know I decided its time for an engine upgrade/rebuild. As it happens there's nothing wrong with my trusty 1600 TP as it stands, I just don't know it's history and would like the project to learn more about my bus and what makes it tick. :D
I did lots of homework and initially set my sights on a 1776, but quickly realised the work and finances involved, not to mention all the other faff like brakes and gearbox upgrades. For a beginner, a little too much me thinks so......

I've decided on a 1641, I know some say you won't notice the difference but others do and to be honest I'm not massively bothered if I don't, if nothing else it'll be an opportunity to learn lots about my bus.

Well, I purchased this today, a fully functioning 1600 AD code 1600 TP for a strip and rebuild.

At the moment my plan is to stick either an engle 110 cam kit or scat c35 kit in the block, maybe balance everything (open to suggestions), 1641 B&Ps, stainless valves and port and polish the heads. I've got 36 dells that will sing nicely too.

So any advice on anything else I might want to consider whilst stripped down gratefully received guys.

Here we go..... :D

I'll watch this with interest - I watched the original thread evolve but couldn't really add anything of any vaue, so didn't bother.

What I did realise was that lots of people who claim to know nothing about engines know a lot more than I do - perhaps I'll start to get it with a more step by step guide ... maybe ...

I'm following so far :D

Some good tips on your thread lard thank you :D

In perusing cams, does anyone have any suggestions on which one best to fit? There's engle 100, 110, 120 and scat c25 & c35 kits. Any advice?

Had a little snoop about the engine today. Found a nice pair of Mexican heads.

Won't know how nice until I bolt them off but I have my fingers crossed for no cracks.
Can any experts tell me how much difference porting my heads will make, if any to the performance. After all it is only a 1641. Is it worth it?

Didn't realise till I got it home but it has a deep sump fitted.

Wee bit oily down there but no matter it's all coming apart anyway and half expect machining.

Pretty new carb, will use all the top bits to bolt onto my current 1600TP and sell it as a running engine I think.

The main lesson learnt today is... Two skinny birds cannot lift a full engine from a camper 12 feet to a garage floor. Fu*k it's heavy! Graham if your reading this pretty please can I borrow either your manliness strength or engine trolley?

I cabled tied a lump of wood to my trolley jack to support the engine and used that to drag it :D

i'd say chuck the deep sump- they're pointless. pop it on ebay and spend the money on something useful :p

porting heads is absolutely worth it, especially on a naturally aspirated engine. it's free too! assuming you've got a die grinder or a multi-tool.

so where did you come across this then
i've been looking for the last 2-3 weeks for 16tp lumps and as yet no luck(fleabay items 400-500 notes :? :? )was not sure whether to trust them or not.

So thumbs up for porting. Can anyone explain why and how much more power I might get?

I guess from a trust perspective I didn't care too much about whether it works or not as I'm rebuilding it :D Gawd knows what I'll find when I crack it open, all I know is the heads are new :D

I had 52bhp from my standard 1600sp with 34icts and an exhaust so with ported heads (done well) and carbs and cam you should be looking at high 50s

1 tip would be, that if you are thinking of fitting a oil pressure sensor then do so now with engine out the van, as over tightening can knacker thread so best to do it with the engine already out!
