Went to start today and petrol started to drip out of the mini top oil breather filter! I drained the oil and loads of petrol came out.

Engine is a 1300SP with 1600 heads. The fuel pump is the style with a screw cap. I am guessing this is where the petrol is coming into the engine from. So I locked the incoming fuel line and swapped the pump with the different type (sealed unit shown below).

Both types have the push flap at the bottom in the same location (slightly inside the flange as opposed to exposed) so I believe push rod is the same.

HOWEVER, when I bolted the new fuel pump on and unlocked the fuel line the petrol started instantly coming out of the oil drain plug. Surely they cant both be faulty? How is petrol getting in?

Any advice please?

Take the new pump of then connect the pipe to the pump and see if it leaks possible to have a bad batch of pumps

I bought a cheap pump once and leaked from new. Not sure where I bought the new one from now?!?

Just took the new pump off and seems ok, so put it back on and seems fine. Will keep a close eye on the oil. Are there any type of repair kits available so I can fix the old one with the screw on top ?

It may not be the pump causing the problem. Check the needle valve (s) on the carb (s) - they sometimes leak so badly that the sump can fill with fuel overnight. The dripping fuel goes down the manifold into the heads then past the pistons.

Had exactly this problem. After loads of time faffing with various fuel pumps and push rods it turned out that the worn needle valves in my carbs (34 icts) were continuously flooding.

Thanks for your help all. I have a stock 34pict3 which I rebuilt a few months ago. I did not realise it could flood and drip down the manifold like that. The manifold underneath the carb was really cold the other day and had condensation on it (when it was hot outside) which was odd. I thought I spotted some petrol near the base of the manifold bolt too.

That said, I replaced with the new pump and it's been ok since, so fingers crossed. If I see the issue again I will check the carb!

I had trouble starting mine one time with twin carbs. One of the manifold was iced up even with the engine running and it would just splutter a bit until I got the revs up (to use the fuel). When stripped down, not only did the needle and seat have a step in it you could park a beetle in  all right a little exageration maybe,, but also the float was punctured which left the needle permanantly open anyhooo, new float / s and needle / s from eurocarb for not too much money and a couple of days delivery, ordered on line as well. Might get something called fuel consumption then

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,, No I don`t always exagerate ;) ;)
