Just checking the engine earlier as I could smell fuel....

The glass bodied fuel pump was leaking quite heavily, when the ignition was on, it was dripping onto the heat exchangers so turned the engine off straight away.

It looked to be leaking/ dripping from the nipple end, the bottom of the fuel pump, I didn't want to inspect it leaking for too long as the engine being fairly warm could have been dangerous.

Is this a common/ known fault, is it possible to replace a seal or tighten up a pipe or is it a new fuel pump that will be needed?

If any one has any answers/ suggestions this would be great!

Sorry, Imeant to say its the paper filter inside the glass case. It looks like the upturned bell jar type.. Located on the left hand side rear of the engine bay

Is your engine a 1700? If so you would of had a mechanical fuel pump at the right hand rear of you engine originally.From your description it sounds like someone has fitted an electric fuel pump,possibly an old SU type as the mechanical fuel pumps are no longer available.

If it is the SU type electric fuel pump then spares are available.Is it like this one? http://www.sucarb.co.uk/SUpumpClassic.aspx?ProductId=26745" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think a picture would be a big help here.

Hi,

It was originally a 1700cc engine, as their is no access through the engine inspection panel!

At some point either in the US or over here a 2 ltr engine has been installed, twin carb set up.

Ill be looking at getting it sorted tomorrow hopefully, so if it turns out to be a us spec part/ fuel pump and I have trouble finding out a seller over I will put some pics up to diagnose what and who will stock this or a replacement.

I have a feeling it's just a fuel filter, and I think it could just be replaced with a plastic jobbie quite easily. a mate who's a passionate vw type1,type 2 mechanic is coming to take a peak tommorow so will soon know !!

Ill keep you posted
