Basically as stated I have a full gas tank yet my gas guage reads 3/4?

Why? And its not a leaky fuel line, I changed that yesterday.

Well while driving the guage came up not to the full mark but managed to climb a little below the full mark? Anyone else have this issue?

My fuel gauge only varies between 1/4 and 3/4 full. Italso waves around as you drive as well. My concern is when it stops at 1/4 as I don't know if I have enough fuel to get home! I too would welcome comments on this...

it reads higher as the voltage goes up .mine goes to just below full and when it reads empty theres about 4-5litres left.I know cos it ran out once and a 5L can didnt move the gauge.(when moving it around at home thank god)

I can only just manage to get mine over the 3/4 mark, using this as a guide I've took it to the empty line on a many an occasion but never on a motorway

I'm of the assumption that it's my vans little protest at the fuel prices nowadays!

Mine only reads a max of 3/4 even when fuel is over the brim. When I think were on empty it only takes £35-40 to fill it up, :? it's the joys of owning a 45 year old Bus I must have about 7 gallons in reserve.

The only problem I have with the fuel gauge is that it goes from full to empty too quickly.

 ^^^ That`s just about what I was gonna post  Great thread fellas, also liked the protest bit  After all it`s only a guage it`s not factual anyhoooooo ;)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,, Seems less expensive if you ain`t filling it all up

And on that note, my blank guage has this...as comical relief,

And it's genrally always about right.

Anyone fitted a second (more accurate hopefully) fuel gauge? Are they available?

My fuel guage reads 1/2 full when the ignition is off, but when i switch on the ignition it goes straight to empty even when the tank is full? any ideas?

mines similar to others here, I just work on the mileage between fill ups keeping a book, making sure I fill up by 200-250 miles. :D

8) exactly what I've beein doung for last 20 yrs... Just wish I had kept the various pueces of paper. I try and fill up on 300kms then usually panic....

I did try various sender things at beginning of ownership but they all died in the end and were never the right ine for my petrol tank, whaever that is! i'd be happy if mine worked even a teensie bit so there is hope I guess for you? Is petrol tank different to sender thingie or been changed?

I had this issue and found out if paticially the reason, my power supply- did'nt have a good connection. On top of that the 40 year old wiring was heavily corroded, and just about to fail. I recently replaced the hot lead to the starter and this if anything helped the gauge just a thought.

Mine is the same only goes to 3/4 drops steadily when used and goes to empty rapidly but never takes a lot to refill, not sure if its the sender or not,it would be handy to find a dignosis guide with the resistance vaues for the sender and gauge. If you fix yours let me know;)

Mine goes right up to full but never seems to go below half, as I found out to my gist one day when I ran out. I usually try to fill up again at the first sign that its getting to half .... Can get about £40 worth in. How much roughly should it cost to fill the tank?

It goes up in price every month  At the moment its about £80.

A standard petrol tank is 13.2 imperial gallons. (or 60 litres) So, if you get 15mpg that's 198 miles, if you get 20mpg that's 264 and for 25mpg its 330miles. Best thing to do if you are not sure about your mpg, is fill up then wait until you have covered about 100 miles or so then fill up again.

The amount of petrol you put in this time is in litres so divide by 4.55 to get gallons. (1 gallon = 4.55 litres)

Then take the mileage you have covered since the first fill up and divide by the gallons figure you've just worked out.

E.g. you cover 100 miles and put in 22 litres. 22 litres is 4.8 gallons (roughly) so the mpg is 100/4.8 = 20.8

After that you can work out the miles you can get out of a full tank. This can vary depending on how much stuff you put in the van and also whether you drive mainly around town or on clear roads so just make sure you fill up well before then!

Hope this helps someone. :)

We sell a VDO Universal Sender and Guage which you can calibrate, so should be accurate. Not sold one to a Bay customer before but many early split customers that didnt have a gauge to start with.

Hope that helps.

There's no need for a second gauge, the stock one works just fine when it has chance.

Two most common issues are poor or corroded connections (gauge and sender) or a bad sender. The sender itself relies on float and resistance and if it's gunked up (old varnished petrol from a period left standing) will often work fine again if removed and cleaned up
